Hello, This posting is from another autism list.

Lenny

Please see the attached email I received from the national ASA. It includes the AAP sessions (more than one, I might add) that are specific to autism. I deleted the name of the original sender for confidentiality reasons. Shirley Fett, President San Diego County Chapter ASA

Subject: Other sessions at the AAP conference I did search the conference site and found an updated session list. In doing so found these topics under autism via the CCD. So there are more sessions than indicated.

Children and Adolescents with Disabilities: Puberty, Sexuality, and Transitional Issues

I190

Saturday, October 08, 2005 4:00 PM-6:00 PM

Caring for children and adolescents with disabilities involves acknowledging the impact of puberty and emerging sexuality on the lives of these young people and their families. The interactive session will provide the primary care physician with an overview of the physical and emotional changes that occur during adolescence, and provide strategies to begin the process of providing developmentally relevant education in this area to children and their caregivers. We will discuss the educational and vocational concerns that also become relevant, as children move out of the public education system.

At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to

· understand the stages of pubertal development in relationship to children with disabilities;

· explore approaches to providing sexuality education, using in-office and community resources;

· recognize the vulnerability of children with disabilities as targets of sexual abuse and understand the clues that suggest abuse;

· understand the rights of persons with disabilities related to issues of sexuality; and

· initiate discussions regarding transition planning for adult life, focusing on optimizing educational, vocational, recreational, and social-sexual needs.

Speaker(s): MD, FAAP , Cohen MD, FAAP

Track(s): Children with Special Health Care Needs/Disabilities
