Guest guest
SMA is a subset of MD, so I would answer " yes. " If you look up the word " dystrophy " ( http://www.onelook.com/?w=Dystrophy & ls=a ), then I think you will agree. --- Terry Willoughby <tntw3@...> wrote: > Today I was filling out an application for a part > time job and in the > health questionnaire I answered no to " Do you have > or have you ever had > any of the following " and there it was " Muscular > Dystrophy " I do have > SMA Type III. Guest guest
I just have one question I am not arguing your point at all. I am wondering what is really the differnce between Atrophy and Dystrophy. I looked up both and I don't see much of a differnce, but there is some. Just curiosity. that is all. thanks, Missy Tom Phan <tomqphan@...> wrote: SMA is a subset of MD, so I would answer " yes. Guest guest
Terry- It was explained to me this way: a dystrophy is when there is already something wrong with the muscle. Atrophy is just weakening of healthy muscle tissue due to the fact that the message is not being recieved correctly...or not at all I guess. The MDA just took us under their umbrella, but they are in essence, very different. missy <ianpaul2@...> wrote: I just have one question I am not arguing your point at all. Guest guest
You're right. There isn't much of a difference between the two words. However, one of the definitions of " atrophy " seems to to imply that you have control of over the degeneration, which is misleading when used a medical context. I think " atrophy " is more of a general term. An astronaut, for example, can experience muscular atrophy after a long space flight without proper excircise. When people ask what disease I have, I usually say, " Muscular Dystrophy " rather than " Spinal Muscular Atrophy. " But that's just me. If you have colon cancer, for instance, you can be general and say you have cancer, or be specific and say you have colon cancer. Maybe that's a bad analogy, but I haven't had much sleep lately. Guest guest
If there is MD listed on a health questionnaire I'll always answer " yes. " However, this was for employment? I don't think they're even allowed to ask you about your health and disabilities on such questionnaires. -Kendra > Today I was filling out an application for a part time job and in the > health questionnaire I answered no to " Do you have or have you ever had > any of the following " and there it was " Muscular Dystrophy " I do have > SMA Type III. Guest guest
Hey Lori, You got a good point. Even in Canada a potential employer can't ask such questions. So maybe instead of saying Yes or No he should say It's none of your business! Guest guest
Generally, asking disability questions is illegal unless and essential function of the job requires one to have MD. Is this an MDA Ambassador job? At 04:59 PM 6/30/2005, you wrote: Today I was filling out an application for a part time job and in the health questionnaire I answered no to " Do you have or have you ever had any of the following " and there it was " Muscular Dystrophy " I do have SMA Type III. I have heard it is a form of M/D but is it truly a Dystrophy or just a disease covered by the MDA. I am just wondering I plan to answer YES just wanted everyone's opinion. Guest guest
Thanks everyone. I did say yes to not mislead anyone but I guess there are 2 ways to look at it also. SMA is a Lower Motor Neuron Disease and Limb Girdle in a Dystrophy. Who knows I wish they would cure it and then I wouldn't care what they call it. Thanks again everyone. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the input. The question was from the workmen's Comp paperwork attached to the application. I answered yes I figure if they don't want to hire me because of that to bad for them anyway. About the regaining muscle thing I went to a gym for 7 or 8 months about 9 years ago and worked out (3) day a week and lifted as much as I could. I gained strength in every area. Even my quad's got stronger I could only do leg extensions with no weight and no shoe on. I was even on a weak steroid I bought on the street. I didn't know I had SMA then. I have started working out again recently but just swimming and bike riding and I do push up's on the steps and still in the water. I have lost much strength over the last 8 years so I will let you know if I gain any this time. Thank you again, Terry
