We have that in our arsenal as well!

I didn't know that the OTC antibiotic ointments would make skin thinner. Do

you know why? We usually use it daily with gauze over it. Wonder if that's why

it gets irritated so easily???

Usually steroidal cremes make skin thinner.

Do I know why? Uhm no I didn't ask the details because I figured over use of

any antibiotics would be bad. I figure tea tree and eucalyptus oil along

with soap and water are enough for most days. If things start acting up then I

put on antibiotic ointment.

It's not that all antibiotic creams irritate/weaken the skin but the doctor

told me to avoid the types like neosporin with multiple antibiotics which

most OTC are. I think it's that one ingredient may be safe for daily use but the

others not so. It's okay to use them occasionally but not everyday.

I think plain bacitracin cream is safe. If you do want to use one everyday

you might try getting a prescription for silvadene (they use it in burn units

so it shouldn't thin skin!) like many gtubers use.

Skin types are different too. What irritates one wont another.

Silvadene is basically an antibiotic cream. You could try a little over the

counter first aid antibiotic cream (just don't use it everyday or it can make

your skin thin).

Use diluted tea tree & eucalyptus oil.

Dab a little Maalox (antacid) around the site as it will neutralize any

stomach acid that may leak and irritate the skin.

Use a skin protective cream like balmax or Vaseline.

You can spray the site with stomahisive powder to help dry up any drainage

or blood.

Stabilize the tube from moving and or resting/digging in the skin with gauze

or makeup sponges.

Or you might try anti fungal cream (like for jock itch) around the site

because fungus/yeast infections around the site can hurt and be red too.

If you have granulation tissue building up it will be red, sore and bleed.

You'll need to remove it by silver nitrate or some have luck (and not painful)

with eucalyptus oil, alum mixed with water or Kenalog cream. If the tissue is

too thick a Dr may need to cut it off.

You may need an oral antibiotic if things get worse or if other things

haven't helped. It could be you need a new tube or another type/size of tube.

With our child we have used a dab of silvadene around trach and g-tube for 6

yrs. as the doctor order and we have never had a problem with any redness or

thin tissue of infection.
