Amy, I was just stating the fact to someone early this month. Why is

it that majority of the families affected by SMA have daughters with

the disease and majority of the SIDS cases are boys? Hows that for

weirdness.

Amy -

I knew one person with SMA III that had a son. All the rest had girls.

(Including my two girls!)

I must have confused you guys - I meant the moms who have SMA seem to have

given birth to more girls than boys.

I have 3 children. My son Jordan (14 yrs) has SMA type II, and my 2

daughters are unaffected. I have always heard that SMA is a little more

prominent in boys than in girls, but I don't know the statistic off

hand.

Weird coincidence?

Do all of the mom's with SMA have daughters? I have seen anyone with a

son!

Scratch that last note from me as it doesn't make any sense. I misread

your comment and thought you were talking about SMA in general, and

wondering about those on this list. I am not a mom (I'm a dad), and I

don't have SMA (my son does), so forget my comment as I have no idea

whether all mothers with SMA have only girls. However, I wouldn't think

that would be the case.

I had always thought this was odd too :) I have read about and met

(online) many mom's with SMA who gave birth to girls, but few who had

boys.

As an interesting side note, one of my Uncles is very much into

trivia, and had a bet going with my dad about who (mom or dad)

determines the sex of an unborn baby at time of conception. My Uncle

swore it is the woman, my dad said it was the man. My Uncle ended up

calling his Doctor to ask, and his Doc said it is the man who

determines the sex of an unborn child. So, the SMA mom's may be

giving birth to girls, but it's the dad's who are engineering (for

lack of a better word!) it that way ;)

Yeah. Biologically, if it were possible for women to make children by

themselves, they only produce females (only having X chromosomes to

contribute). It's the sperm that determines if that egg stays a girl

(by contributing a second X) or becomes a boy (contributing a Y

chromosome). So perhaps it may appear that more women with SMA on

this board have more daughters, there isn't any reason to believe

that that is true all around.

Not being scientific at all, I am aware that girls tend to be able to

endure more during the time prior to birth. Historically, there have

been many more miscarriages of boys than girls. So I would wonder if

it may be possible that a woman with sma would be more susceptible to

losing a boy than a girl...even in the earliest stages of pregnancy

when she may not be aware that she was pregnant.
