Guest guest
Hi Folks! - If you don't already know, I'm looking for a housemate. Feel free to forward this ad to any folk that might be interested. Thanks! Alana Share 2+ Bedroom Berkeley House with a Yard - $675 1st & Last Plus $500 Deposit 40% PG & E 50% H2O Separate Phone Cable-Ready Possible DSL Share (wiring needed) Available August 1st or Sooner The House & Room The house is a Berkeley bungalow that has a lot of light and hardwood floors. It's a bit funky as are many older rentals (1913ish?), but the property owner does repairs as requested (new water heater, refrigerator and gas stove!). A washer and dryer will be purchased this summer. There's a ramp to the front door, but the bathroom is not wheelchair accessible. The bedroom is 11' x 11' with a 9' x 7' 2nd room attached (down one step). The 2nd room has an external door that leads to the backyard which is being landscaped. The owner is very nice, and lives in a house in the backyard. The room is private but off of the kitchen, so there is some (but courteous) kitchen noise. I have lived here since July 1996 and am surrounded by good neighbors. There is a co-housing community next door. Dogs are not allowed. Cats & other small pets are welcome. There's easy on-street parking, and a place for a bicycle in the house. The cross-streets are Sacramento near University (a short walk to N. Berkeley BART, a nice walk up Allston to downtown Berkeley & UCB). Andronico's Supermarket, a hardware store, 2 video stores and many restaurants (Indian, Thai, American Breakfast, Sushi, Mediterranean, Mexican & Italian) are within 5 blocks, though it's still a homey neighborhood. I keep the house clean and don't often let dishes sit for more than a day. Me I'm a 38 year old woman who works as an administrator and counselor in downtown Berkeley at a non-profit computer school. My boyfriend stays over night probably 1 or 2 nights a week and I probably stay at his place once a week. We're not joined at the hip, so there wouldn't be a covert boyfriend-move-in attack. I use a wheelchair and hire people to come in twice a day to get me up and put me to bed, and hire someone to do my chores and assist with cooking adventures. I don't hire my roommate or expect them to assist with my care. I'm very independent. It's a social household - I'm hoping for a housemate who makes her/himself at home. My down-time is spent chatting with long-distant friends on the computer, watching DVDs, having a friend over for tea or a meal, taking walks, reading, playing table games, doing beadwork, gourmet cooking, and when I have the house to myself I pull out the punk rock music (grin). I host a monthly book club/potluck, and have a monthly-ish " Girls Night " dinner with 3 of my oldest friends and a 4-year old cutie pie. I'm not a party animal and don't want to live with a heavy drinker or stoner, though, don't mind either substance being used moderately. I'm actually partial to wine but am a true lightweight. I am open to sharing some meals and can accommodate vegetarians and vegans well, though, am an omnivore myself and do cook some meat in the house. I am politically left, recycle and keep an environmentally friendly house. I am bisexual and have many GLBT people in my life so want my home to be comfortable and welcoming for all, so no homophobes please. I am not religious. I don't want to live with a tobacco-smoker and am allergic to most incense, perfume, stinky hair goop... Please tell me about yourself and your best/worst housing experience. Pet peeves? Favorite things to do in your free time? Cheers! Alana 510-845-5653
Guest guest
What's the bathroom like? 100% wheelchair accessible? needed room for shower chair? what about the kitchen area? pull under sinks and lowered counter tops or is that a problem for you or other wheelchair users? ~Kendra > Hi Folks! - If you don't already know, I'm looking for a housemate. Guest guest
Okay so it my excitement and rush I just caught this - how do you deal with the situation? Sorry and thanks! ~Kendra > a ramp to the front door, but the bathroom is not wheelchair accessible. >
Guest guest
So you have attendant care to do all of the lifting, transfers, cooking, etc...? Are they live-in? How does that work out? I've never relied on someone to help with transferring and these such things. However, recently I'm falling A LOT. My mom's been pushing me to try and get more care but I'm stubborn and I guess I'm not ready to accept I need it - since I can do it myself, just varies day to day and when I'm feeling weak. Also, you mentioned this other room has a second room off of it - could it potentially be a room for a third roommate or would you hesitate/have other plans for this space? > > There's > > a ramp to the front door, but the bathroom is not wheelchair accessible. > > > > There are no other architectural modifications - Don't need them if one > can't move arms or lift more than 8 oz. > >
