I have been under numerous insurance plans, including those through my

husband's work, and none of them have ever covered durable medical

equipment except for wheelchairs. For some reason insurance companies

are particularly notorious for denying to pay for anything that is not

directly medically *necessary*. I guess they figure we should get bed

bathes or not bother to bathe at all. Very stupid!

Yes, you can get someone like an OT to write up a justification for you. A

letter of Medical Necessity and have your doctor sign it. You need the

justification sound very medical such as inability to perform self care

activities secondary to decreased range of motion, etc. Also, I'm sure

you've done this already, ensure that the DME provider you are going through

accepts your insurance.

more insurance problems...HELP

Ok, I just came onto another major insurance problem.

I am purchasing a sliding/rolling shower chair for my bathroom. I currently

have been using a regular store bought plastic lawn chair, but it makes

things more difficult and isnt so safe.

I have blue cross insurance and medi-cal. both have denied to pay any of

the cost of the $1,700 chair, saying " any other person could use it, not

only you " uhh, yea LOL. I called MDA, they cannot help. Ive never had

problems getting other equipment covered.

Is there some way to get them to cover at least part of the cost that I'm

missing here?

yeah I think your best bet is to get a justification letter from any

doctor/professional. The more the better - primary care, physical

therapist, occupational therapist, neurgologist, etc etc...anyone you

see on a regular basis.

Basically, we don't. If MDA didn't cover electric wheelchairs, I

wouldn't have one either. Even with private insurance the COPAY would

be too high.
