I think that varies from person to person. When I was still walking,

we did get a wheelchair as back up. We also needed to keep in mind

places we were going to be everyday - were there stairs involved? how

many? how steep are they going to be? how long of a distance would I

have to be walking? what type of terrain was I walking on? are there

are periods of break to sit down and relax? are there people around to

assist in carrying or holding me up in case I fatigue too quickly? It

also depends on the stage of progression. Just a year before the point

where we starting calculating if I could make it through days, we

didn't have to worry about anything except people walking by and

bumping into me, knocking me over. Other than that, I was walking

distances perfectly fine and could manage stairs. I think it's good to

have a wheelchair as backup. When I was going to school then, I would

bring the wheelchair to school and leave it in an office. If I felt

too tired, I'd have someone bring me the chair for the next hour so I

could rest up and then begin walking again.

Syeda,

So far the things I have found most helpful are a cane and reacher (the kind

with the claw on the end). Also, if you have any hallways to walk through, it

is a big help to have a handrail that runs the entire length of the wall. It

helps with balance and if you suddenly get too tired to keep walking it gives

you something to hold on to and lean on. There are a few different types of

walkers, but personally I don't think they would be useful to me.

What'd be in consideration?

Hi all

I was wandering if anybody could suggest about the thing/s that'd be

taken in consideration by the SMAers still walking unassisted to meet

their needs and/or to manage with their progressive condition. Thanks

Syeda

Oh yeah! - We used to put up bookshelves that ran the length of our

hallway in case I got too tired. I suppose a handrail is more sturdy

and trustworthy, but I was barely 30 pounds at the time so it wasn't a

big deal for me.

Hi Syeda,

I haven't heard from you in a while. I hope that your studies

are going well! I think the key to your question is to plan ahead

for the inevitable progression of the SMA symptoms. When you notice

unsteadiness when walking distances, try using a cane for support.

If you find walking long distances is becoming too exhausting, look

at using a 3-wheeled electric scooter to conserve your energy for

more important things. When looking for housing, avoid choices that

require the use of stairs. Plan for a career that is possible from

a seated position, and requires little physical strength. Also, put

effort into staying connected with friends, family and your

community, and avoid becoming isolated by your SMA symptoms.

Take care,

Randall
