Guest guest Posted April 25, 2004 Report Share Posted April 25, 2004 I had the exact same thing happen to me and it was the spyware virus thing. My Internet Explorer was completely gone- I could not access it except to go into the tool bar and then it would only give me error messages. I luckily still had AOL on my computer from years ago and knew someone who currently has AOL. They let me sign on as a guest and type in their user name and password to search for the adware software to get rid of it. I downloaded Lavasoft Ad-aware 6.0 FREE and it took care of it. I now run this along with my Norton AntiVirus every week and have not had a problem since. Do you have access to another internet option on your computer to get rid of it? I hope this helps. No boot CD Rom, no drivers, and no internet access at the moment to get them. Not to forget the time spent backing up all those essential files, links etc. Of course you might get away with just slapping another copy of Windows over the top without a proper fdisk and format, but really thats like slapping a band-aid over a bandage - quick and dirty fix, but not satisfactory in the long term. If its WinXP, now you're talking - anything but the very latest hardware and you're pretty likely to have it all on one CD. However, even if its XP, I wouldnt do a reinstall without first backing everything up just in case. Guest guest Posted April 28, 2004 Report Share Posted April 28, 2004 Have you ever reinstalled XP? I have. Fairly simple. Although too simple for MicroSoft. Once reinstalled, nothing works anymore. All those nice programs that came with the computer no longer are able to be found. I put in the CDs to my programs and it wouldn't accept the serial numbers because they had already been used, even though it was the exact same computer I was trying to put it onto, it gave me this strange message. XP is a piece of garbage. Reinstalling makes it a piece of crap. Guest guest Posted April 28, 2004 Report Share Posted April 28, 2004 Believe me, Im a software developer and out of choice, I wouldn't touch XP with a barge pole... Win 2K is my OS of choice. Saying that, a lot of the features of XP make it a lot more accessible to the novice user/installer, and it does install well if you happen to have one of the more dubious versions out there (*cough* pirate *cough*) where the hacker has gone to the effort of removing most of the rubbish security features As for Mac, you'll not convince me. I had the misfortune of working for a company that used Macs a few years ago - it makes my skin crawl thinking about it.
