RE: swallowing difficulties?

I agree with ; age has nothing to do with swallowing ability. I

am 56 (type I/II) and have never had trouble chewing or swallowing. I

do need something to drink while eating, but if I have a glass of water

I can eat just about anything I want. I have to eat slow and if I am

very tired I need to rest between bites, but all in all eating has never

been a problem for me. I can also open my mouth quite wide and stick out

my tongue (but not touch my nose as someone asked, LOL. But Mike can!).

Also, like , I have very weak neck muscles and cannot hold my head

up.

I think its one of the huge variables w/ sma that  i've noticed.

some people seem to have certain  parts of their body more affected

than other parts, or have every part affected equally.  some

progress fast, some slow and some don't  even  notice much

progression.

For me, swallowing isn't a problem.  I'm sure  my  swallowing is

weaker than the average AB for sure,  but I've  never had

difficulty getting food  down,  chewing.  I can eat any type

of  food. The only thing that is sometimes difficult is saliva if im

laying down.  My sma doesn't seem to have affected my  facial

muscles much really for some reason.  I can make expressions easily

and my  speech isn't that affected. i do notice if i talk a lot my

voice gets tired/weaker/slurred.  the  rest of my  body it has

of  course taken a toll on.  my  neck  is most affected (cant

support head sitting up)

have you tried a marinade? that typically makes the meat very tender.

if you marinade overnight and cut the pieces up small, i think it

would be best.

i dont eat meat regularly, so i dont have that problem. however, the

past year ive noticed a decrease in muscle strength in my jaw. its

more difficult to chew but not that it becomes such a big deal.

lol I do that and notice it most of the time. I've tried not doing it just to

see what would happen and I just can't help it.

A fashion accessory is a belt, dude. You've got some MAJOR mental issues. I

just don't get you at all.

Hey, I know this too!!! They say that eating and reading at the same time is not

good, but if I eat alone, I just need a newspaper or magazine to read or else I

get bored to death - I am sooo slow.

Re: Re: swallowing difficulties?

Ever since I had my first daughter and developed massive scar tissue in

my throat from the rushed intubation, I have had swallowing

difficulties. It's weird cuz I can swallow pretty big vitamins, but I

can accidently choke on a piece of lettuce. I can't chew tough things,

so I often chop things up into teeny-tiny bits in our food processor. I

can even easily eat salad this way, which I love! In the afternoon, I

drink protein shakes because frankly I get bored eating cuz it takes me

so darn long.

Hey, do any of you drink everything with a straw or do you lift drink

cups/glasses okay?

If you drink only with a straw, do you ever feel like you are using your

mouth muscles too much to suck up the drinks? I only drink with a straw and

I don't know if this is safe for the long term.

Just a-wonderin'!

I was told that having Aschdon drink his stuff through a straw was

wonderful Pt for his mouth. Granted he is only four but I believe it

has helped keep his mouth free from problems so far.

I have to turn my head to the right to swallow well. In fact, when I

am intubated, my head needs to be turned to the extreme right so my

trachea is 'straight'. Just another of my medical oddities!

Generally for drinking I use a platic 'mug' with a handle, only filled

up about halfway. I'm afraid if I don't force myself to do this, I'll

loose the ability to pick up lightweight cups. I drink my protein

shakes or sodas at restaurants with a straw. I think sucking things

through straws is actually good exercise in it's own right, but I don't

have any concrete 'proof' on this.

No, the doctor removed it a couple weeks after I got out of the hospital.

Which leads me to another 'funny' story. I went in to have it removed

in his office and a nurse explained to me that there is a little

'balloon' under your skin that anchors it, which the doctor would

deflate to remove it. The doctor came in and started wrapping the

tubing around his hand. I said, " Wait, don't you have to deflate the

balloon?! " He put one foot on my footrest and yanked. This thing the

size of a wine bottle cork comes out of me. He goes, " There is no

balloon. "

Despite that shock, I was happy to get the thing out. Besides getting

caught on everything and snapping like a rubberband, it didn't make me

feel very 'sexy', if you know what I mean...

Oh yuck. I remember when I had a central line in, when they went to take it

out they used lidocaine (sp?) but didn't give it enough time to work. I had

just had my trach removed too so I virtually had no voice and was TRYING to say

" stop, it hurts " etc. but they said if it really hurt, I'd be screaming. =P

Nice, huh? Anyway, yeah... I don't need any added annoyances! =)
