I have an electric bed -- sit the bed up, lean forward, tuck sling behind.

Lean back again, run bed back down flat, pull bottom of sling down, sit

bed back up part way. Hook up sling to lift, and crank away!

i lie on a pressure mattress. when on my back i have an assistant push the

sling through as far as possible from one side. as the mattress is air

filled in gives as you apply pressure so as they push the sling through they

push down into the mattress so they can get it under me. they then go round

to the other side and pull the two straps through til the sling is fairly

central. as they pull the top strap they hold my shoulder with one hand to

prevent me moving toward them with the sling. when they are pulling the

lower strap they hold my hip with the spare hand, again to prevent me moving

as the sling is pulled through. then the four straps are hooked up and

usually everything falls into just the right place as i press the up button.

it takes a while to get the knack, but the key is to push down into the

mattress when initially pushing the sling under you, then holding either a

hip or shoulder as it is pulled through.

hello sue!

i use a sling for all my transfers at home and no i don't sit on it all day.

it just gets wrapped round me and tucked down at the back when needed. i

would say it was a lot easier than putting a coat on. i would just add that

i MUCH prefer a ceiling track hoist compared to a mobile hoist

cheers

So, do you have a sling round your back and another under your legs?

How much support does it give you? Does it hold your head up? I will

probably need one some day but I am really floppy and worried how

uncomfortable it would be.

my sling is in one piece, going under my legs and up behind my head. there

are many many types of slings of various sizes. i imagine there would be one

that would suit you and feel safe, though the first time is scary! maybe an

occupational therapist could do a home visit? though unfortunately they are

not all to be trusted with knowing what is safe and comfortable for us. how

about contacting the MD family care officer, i know there used to be an

excellent OT who used to work for the MD group, or maybe the jennifer trust?

if i get chance i will get a photo done of how my sling works, though mine

doe not give as much head support as others.

it took a while to get used to using it as it is a lot slower than a manual

transfer but i have to say i do prefer it now as i don't have to worry about

new pa's dropping me. the only disadvantage is that people who started

working for me since i started using a cceiling track hoist have not

developed the skill of safe lifting for when we are away from my house, and

so in some ways i have become hoist dependent

cheers

Sue,

We use a hoyer lift and sling for Danny. The sling we use is a

Padded U-Sling w/Head support. The lift is a Hoyer Hydrolic Lift, but

you can also get power ones. It comes apart so we can take with us on

trips easily. Here is the link to the manufacturer's site.

http://www.sunrisemedical.com/index.jsp Click on products, then

lifts and it will get you to them (with pics). We slide it down

behind his back in w/c, then the long pieces tuck under each leg and

cross before hooking to the lift. It's been very safe and comfortable

for him.

Thanx for the link , I had a look. That would probably be quite

comfortable using that. As said, I think I would be scared the

first time tho. Does the head and leg part of the lift move separately?

i mean do you go from sitting to laying position when you're on the

bed?

I have a a sling that has head support. I have no neck control. The head part

has straps that can hold your head in but i never use because i cant breath

with my chin in. The sling has a flexable metal 'spine' and that is all i

need to hold my head. It doesnt flap around or anything. I like my neck

hanging back a bit. I have a ceiling track from my bedroom down the hall into

the bathroom and in the shower. I can fly down the hall. I can be lowered to

the bathtub/floor and hang to have sex...oh i mean shower! ;)

hi everyone!

i sit on my sling all day, i leave the sling under me with the metal bars

it.

we used some tape and a safety pin hookd up to the hoyer sling to hold

the tubes as i transfer i have super long tubes but am no longer vent

dependant so i am off my vent when i wake up each a.m.
