MY boys are down at s getting the new TES unit 2000.. I am happy . Long

battle with ins company but finally they are here. A boy with CP that was

using a wheel chair is now using a cane after 12 months of TES. He says he

feels like he has a new life. I hope this is the case for Spencer. He is more

mild then Adam. Adam hopefully it will just help. This TES works just takes a

long time.

Hello the House,

Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation (TES) is a type of electrical

stimulation used at night while the individual is sleeping. The goal of TES

is to increase the blood flow to the muscles in which the fibers are

atrophied (very withered and weak). TES is used in conjunction with physical

and o occupational therapies to strengthen the muscles an improve the

individuals functional abilities. The TES program was developed by Dr.

Pape at the McGee Clinic in Toronto, Canada. Dr Pape has used TES on

individuals with disuse atrophy since 1989

Introduction

Therapeutic electrical stimulation (TES) is a type of electrical stimulation

used at night while the individual is sleeping. The goal of TES is to

increase blood flow to muscles in which fibers are atrophied (very withered

and weak). TES is used in conjunction with physical and occupational

therapies to strengthen the muscle and improve the individual's functional

abilities. The TES program was developed by Dr. Pape at the Magee

Clinic in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Pape has used TES on individuals with DISUSE

atrophy since 1989.

Candidates

Individuals who have disuse atrophy are candidates for TES. The muscle must

be innervated (the connection between the brain, nerve and muscle must be

intact). A child must be at least two years of age and be of average size and

weight. The individual must also have a definite diagnosis for the muscle

atrophy. The family must be motivated as this is a daily program administered

at home.

THERAPEUTIC ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

TES--Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation--is a low level electrical

stimulation that does not contract the muscles but is enough to get blood to

flow to them in hopes of helping stimulate muscle growth. The electrodes are

worn at night during sleep when the body rejuvenates itself the most, in

order to get optimum benefit. The electrodes are placed on the atrophied

muscles in hopes to get them to grow and counteract the over active spastic

muscles or to just get hypotonic muscles to gain strength. A person has to be

evaluated by a qualified therapist and approved before they can begin

therapy. Patients are followed closely while on the TES and reevaluated at

least every six months to mark progress and determine if placement of the

electrodes is providing the desired effect.

----------

I also read that a TES machine costs about $300, but if you buy it through

Mayatec it costs over a thousand $$. Studies have shown that no brand is

better than another.
