Guest guest
Hi Pam, I use .5 oz per pound of soap batch with most EOs. Much more than that and it tends to weep. With my own German Shepherd Dogs the Peppermint EO scent from my dog shampoo bar lasts about a week. That's why I said that was a lot of baths. It would be interesting to find out if Pennyroyal really repels fleas from a entomologist. And if so how it works. And if it works so how much of the EO is needed and how often it needs to be refreshed How much Pennyroyal do these folks think is necessary to keep fleas out of your yard and away from your dog? Is there any chance of your dog becoming sensitized to Pennyroyal? Do you have fleas now or is this preventative? Regards, Sherry > I've done my homework fairly well, spoken to at least 3 people that I feel > know their stuff when it comes to herbs and EO's and know the safe > amount/limits. Guest guest
Sherry my whole reason for asking the question to begin with is to find out how much it would take to repel the fleas. The safe amount of Pennyroyal to use in the soap I was told is .7 percent. With a citrus EO is .4 that is not necessarily for dogs, but what is safe in soap, but use of the certain EO, amounts vary and are different. How much it would take to 'help' repel the fleas, I don't know, again my reason for asking the group. We are seeing a good many ticks right now, but no fleas as of yet, and I hoped to use it as a preventative, but I know it's coming. I'm told, and my research tells me, the smell of the EO is what keeps the biting bugs from being so bad. I understand the over use of most anything could be a problem. I don't plan on bathing my dogs once a week, that is not a good thing for them, or for me. But my thoughts are, if there are fleas on my dog, a bath will help, more so than the toxins from the over the counter flea controls. The Pennyroyal doesn't keep fleas from my yard, heavens with 30 areas that would be impossible, but does keep my outside sitting area, where we spend so much time, clear of flying, biting pests. I made candles for the table outside with those particular EO and that helps. I plan to do more research and testing. And I do not take lightly the seriousness that something could go wrong. I take full responsibility. This is not a soap for market, but for home use only, at least until the research faze is complete (which could take a long time) and I know for a fact it's safe. I've been working on this about 8 months already, but expect to for at least another year. Thanks for your interest in this subject, but I must move on, getting ready for shows. I have 3 big 3 day shows back to back beginning this Friday. So I have to put my attention to that now. Have a great day. Pam
Guest guest
......The safe amount of Pennyroyal to use in the soap I was told by the herbal supplier is .7 percent Oops if that confused anyone, what I should have said was .7 oz per lb. That is what happens when I'm not awake good yet. sorry! Pam
Guest guest
That's about the same as my .5 ounces per pound of soap. To find out how much is safe to use on your dog I would find out how much it takes to repel fleas from an entomologist. I suspect you will need a rinse or a wipe on application for the pennyroyal as the soap may not leave enough EO on your dog to be effective. After finding out how much it takes to repel fleas then I would ask a vet who specializes in allergies if the amount is safe. You should then know if soap is the way to go or not. > .....The safe amount of Pennyroyal to > use in the soap I was told by the herbal supplier is .7 percent > > Oops if that confused anyone, what I should have said was > .7 oz per lb. > > That is what happens when I'm not awake good yet. sorry! > > Pam
Guest guest
I would assume that with an oil like pennyroyal it is always best to stay on the side of caution, remember that dogs will also clean themselves and may ingest any residue left from the shampoo. Personally i would choose citronella, eucalyptys and citrus oils because of the reduced risk of side effects.
Guest guest
>I was told by the herbal supplier is .7 percent< That is way out. The official figure is 0.1 percent and that is for human products only. On animals who knows, certainly not this herbal supplier. Never ever rely on urban rmours when dealing with safety. Guest guest
what urban rumors are you talking about? I got my numbers from my supplier. If you have info on this subject don't just pop in and out with a quirky remark, elaborate a bit. Talk to me. Tell me what you know. Guest guest
I know that i am not an expert on this but i had a consult with my holistic vet this afternoon, She said that although the Pennyroyal EO has not been linked to any complications she would not use it on a pregnant or lactating Female. That use on a male would be fine in small amounts. She discouraged the use of the dried herb or plants entirly because it not only acts as an abortificant but can cause other internal bleeding and cramping, Although external use is limited in soaps, the concern would be the plants in the yard, you never know what a dog will snack on especially when they are in the mood for munching on greens. Miscarriage would not be a problem for male dogs there is a risk of other bleeding. So although the EO is probably fine in soaps i would still venture to use other antiparasitic, repellent oils in a dog shampoo
Guest guest
WOW some article. You have done your home work well. Thank you. Now for a question 0.1 is that per pound of oils including shea, cocoa butters, Etc, in cp soap? Also if I was to use pennyroyal for a bug spay for my family and pets along with citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, maybe some lemon would this hurt. This would come to 0.1 per oil, per pound of water with preservatives. Donna Re: Pennyroyal to control fleas >I was told by the herbal supplier is .7 percent< That is way out. Guest guest
This just has me scratching my head. I read your article and don't see how in the world one says .7, another says .1 percent and both say THEY each are correct. I've read other percentages on other web sites during the research as well. How does one know WHO and WHAT percent is correct? I cannot see anyone saying more is safe if in fact it is untrue, just to sell a product. My last email may have sounded a bit crude, it was not meant to. Just tell me more, talk to me, means HELP! Send me where I need to go to learn more. Guest guest
Would not use rosemary on dogs? And would a spray be better than a shampoo. I need one for the whole family pets and grand kids. Guest guest
I can! I have seen it over and over again in Aromatherapy. It is truly sickening that people would be that way, but some definitely are! Always err on the side of caution, and research with RELIABLE sources, NOT vendors! Guest guest
Re weights: I can't work in US measures as they are a mathematical nightmare. The best thing you can do is work in metric and then percentages are a piece of cake. Someone else on this list may be able to do the translations to metric weights. 1% of a runny oil like pennyroyal equals around 20 drops. 1 gram or ml. in 99 grams of product ois about 1%. Personally I have little confidence in the insect repelant abilities of pennyroyal oil. Citronella works for some bugs but not all and you have to be careful with how it is used. For example some people use it for horses, but I would never use it on a creature that gets hot and sweaty. > WOW some article. You have done your home work well. Thank you. Guest guest
From the sounds of things, it might be best if I just use these EO in a back porch candle? instead of a shampoo bar. I appreciate all the input. Pam

Guest guest
Pam, This may an issue of apples and oranges. When you asked what was safe in soap I assumed you meant what is a safe level for your dog. Then it sounded more like you were asking what percentage was safe for the actual making of the soap. Maybe that's where these two numbers come from. The .7 oz per pound of oil in a soap recipe is the average amount of EO added to soap. And it sounds like the .1 % is the safe usage rate. Maybe that explains the different numbers and the way they're used.
