Guest guest
What a timely post for me! I'm currently on Depo. I'm a depo lover. No periods, no PMS, no problems.... loooooove it. But, Kaiser recommends that you use it for no more than 2 yrs and then cycle off of it. So, I too am looking for alternate bc. It has something to do with the long term affects on your bone density. anywhoooo... I looked into the Nuvaring and called for an RX. My OB told me that she would prefer to put me on low dose pills. Nuvaring is too new. It can take years to reveal any long term or short term issues. She told me that she'd rather anyone but her patients test it out first. Another word about depo, my sister and I are like you and your sis. BUT, we have wholley different reactions to bc methods! She tried the patch and had problems, depo made her Bitchzilla and she had breakthru bleeding and weight gain, and the pill gives her side affects. And, she's an eater and I'm a workout junky so she gained on depo, I don't gain at all (in fact, I lost 93 lbs while on depo following Weight Watchers). I've been thinking that my plateau is related to depo so I'll see if switching to the low dose pill will alleviate that problem. It could make it worse with water weight gain and such. I've worked SO HARD over the past 8 weeks and my weight is finally going down. Slowly. 1 lb a week or less. Is that because of depo? I'm not sure. I've ruled out everything else (overeating, not workout out hard enough). Now I'm nervous to start a new bc method. Good luck with your decision. You can try depo and if you are having too many side affects they can put you on the pill at any time to alleviate them. Everyone reacts differently to every method. I'm sending my hubby to get snipped soon, in the meantime I think I'll just take a low dose pill like my ob recommended. > > Sorry for the short notice, but tomorrow I'm having an exam and will be > looking into changing my birth control method. > > I'm considering the NuvaRing - any pros or cons on that? > > Thanks! > Leah S > > >
Guest guest
And I totally think that weight gain is your choice. You may get hungrier and you may retain water, but gaining fat is all about what you put in your mouth. You are in control of your body, not vice versa. Sorry to be harsh, but once I owned that my weight was my decision, it was a turning point for me with managing a healthy body. Good luck to you! > My sister has been taking the Shot, but she told me that she's going to look > for another method, because she too has gained 25 pounds in a year. > > My sister and I are genetically alike - as in people will think we're twins > due to the similarities. Guest guest
What pill are you taking? Leah S <sunflowersinthegarden@...> wrote: Sorry for the short notice, but tomorrow I'm having an exam and will be looking into changing my birth control method. Currently I'm on the pill. When I started, I weighed about 215. In a year I shot up to about 240. I didn't blame it on the pill - college, wedding stress, anything but the pill. Well, I've been maintaining between 235-240 for a good two years now. Yes, I've completed a BFL challenge (shortened to 9 weeks) and I only went down to 234 from 243. I was very pleased with that, but I can't seem to get lower. I weighed myself the other week and it said 235. The other thing I remember is before I was taking the pill I was 201 pounds, and in 3 months I dropped to 187 merely by cutting out munchies, sweets and walking for about 30 minutes three times a week. So clearly to me, the pill has a huge hinderence on my ability to lose weight. My sister has been taking the Shot, but she told me that she's going to look for another method, because she too has gained 25 pounds in a year. My sister and I are genetically alike - as in people will think we're twins due to the similarities. So I'm sure that if I were to try the shot, I would have the same effect as she does. I would really appreciate any suggestions or insight to a better method. My husband won't do condoms (and I'm not interested in that), he's against the IUD, but otherwise would give me free reign to methods. We also won't consider anything permanent, even though kids aren't on the plan right now. The things I've enjoyed about the pill is that it's given me energy - I get very sluggish and emotional when I go off it for a week. It's lessened my period flow, drastically cut back on my cramps, and it's helped me have a steady mood. I've also enjoyed being able to have sex without any " preparation " - I wouldn't want to stop and have to put something in RIGHT beforehand. I'm considering the NuvaRing - any pros or cons on that? Thanks! Leah S

My DH was really against the IUD because the ones in years past had caused so many health problems. But they have chnaged dramatically. If those are his reasons, you might want to talk to your ob/gyn for information on the new IUDs. I use the Mirena IUD and absolutely love it myself. Guest guest
Tara, my pills are a generic brand " Lo/Ovral " . I used to be on " brand name " pills and switching didn't cause any changes for the better or the worse. I did get the Ring today and I'll be starting that my next period. The first two months probably aren't going to be that fun (spotting, etc) but I promised myself to give it at least 3 months before complaining. Oh, and I did notice that the Ring is less than HALF of the hormones I'm taking with the pill. Guest guest
Colleen, he's against the IUD because it can act as an abortifacient. (The egg and sperm have bigger chances of bumping into each other, opposed to the pill or Ring that help prevent ovalation). Mainly it goes against his religious beliefs. Also, I had a friend who had an IUD and ended up getting pregnant. The baby survived, but the doctor wanted to abort it when they found out she was pregnant. So I don't have a lot of faith in an IUD. Guest guest
Have you considered a cervical cap? Many Europeans have used it for years as it is more effective than the diaphram. You could couple that with spermicide during your most fertile times of the month and thus avoid pregnancy. If you do chose a barrier method (other than a condom) I would highly recommend getting the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It is a fabulous book that goes into great detail about the fertility cycle and how to know exactly when you are most fertile - both for the purpose of avoiding pregnancy and obtaining pregnancy. In this book, it also talks about different kinds of birth control. It's a fabulous book and I think it would behoove many women to know how their reproductive system works. There is always a risk when putting hormones in one's body (even if it is very small) and I think it's in a woman's interest to get as much informed choice as possible about all of the myriads of decisions we need to make re: our reproductive health. Good luck with your choices! Peace, > >> I would really appreciate any suggestions or insight to a better > method. Guest guest
I started with Depo back in 97. I loved, loved, loved it! No periods. But, I did gain weight and my bodyfat seemed to distribute differently. Whereas before, I had a waist and gained it all in my hips, butt, and thighs, after, it all landed in the belly area. Sure there were a lot of things that could have contributed to that, but, after I went off the shot, my body changed back to a waist and hips! LOL!! I will never forget the day I walked in to get my shot and the nurse looked at my chart, got a panicked look on her face, and said very seriously...'you must see the doctor'. I met with the doctor and she said that there had been a study that just came out that stated a significant amount of bone density loss if you are on the shot for 2 years. She asked how long I had been on the shot...............I said.......8 years (gulp). Since then, I have been on the low dose pill but cycle them. I only have periods 4 times per year. I guess that's not bad but I do miss the no period days. I think I will keep the bone denisty though. It is reversible so no permanent damage. Just be careful though if anyone decides to go on the shot. >From: " heyjami " <heyjami@...> >Reply- > >Subject: Re: Birth Control/Weight Gain >Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 16:22:16 -0000 > >What a timely post for me! > >I'm currently on Depo. Not sure how long ago, but this was very common with the older IUDs. My friend said she was born with her mother's IUD in her hand I hope you find something that works for you both!! Guest guest
I'm on Depo too - had been on it because I have severe pain at ttom but came off it before Christmas. Problem is with my weightloss in the mix as well as coming off the depo I then started cycling every 2 weeks. Which with the pain as severe as mine is Is a PITA to say the very least of it. I had my needle on Monday to go back onto Depo and I am hoping it will stop me menstruating again (although the Dr. has said no guarantees anymore) Keeping up my calcium and impact workouts though because I hadn't heard of the bone density thing.
