Guest guest Posted October 28, 2001 Report Share Posted October 28, 2001 I am the mother of a 7 year old daughter with OCD. She was diagnosised two years ago. She has gone through therapy and was on Luvox. the therapist gave my daughter and myself coping skills to deal with her OCD. She is no longer in therapy or on medication. Our biggest challenge seems to be school. I have discussed this with her teacher. The teacher has admitted that she has no experience with OCD. My daughter is very smart and has no trouble with her school work. The problem is that she takes a long time to complete her work. She needs everything to be perfect. She will stay on one thing for a long time until she gets it right. The teacher has punished her by not letting her participate in class fun activities which, only makes the situation worse for my daughter. We also have times when she is afraid of contamination. When she was diagnosed she would refuse to swallow for fear that her saliva would make her sick. She has overcome that but, there are times when touching something different or new will upset her. One of her other problems is being in a new situation. If there are a lot of people around my daughter will curl oup on my lap and withdraw from the situation. She has learned how to cope quite well. We have learned to use the fear thermometer and that has worked quite well for us. My daughter is also old enough to communicate her fears to me.
