OCDKidsSupportGroup

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that the OCDKids list is now up and ready to

run. We just need the kids! This is a list for kids 7-12 who have OCD. It

is intended as a source of support much like what we all experience on this

list. It's also a great opportunity for them to meet other kids with OCD. I

will be moderating the kids list for safety and appropriate content.

To subscribe, send email to the following address:

OCDKidsSupportGroup-subscribe

We should all say a big thank you to Louis Harkins for setting this up!

Kathy - hope some boys join! I asked my 12 y/o about the

group. His first reaction " no. " I asked him wouldn't he like to

read/talk to other kids with OCD; and I said he wouldn't have to type

anything, he could just read what the others say - then if he ever

wanted to comment on something, he could. So he said " maybe " but

don't sign him up yet. I guess " lurking " will be OK with this group

won't it?

One more question - if I do manage to get him interested, he turns 13

in January. Could he still be in the group - his maturity level is

much younger.

Thanks, and it's a great idea. The other group for teenagers is a

lot more mature, way too mature for him!

Hi Patty,

Unfortunately I can't sign you up. You need to do it from your address.

Address an email to

OCDKidsSupportGroup-subscribe

and type the word subscribe in the subject line. You should then get a

message back saying that has recieved a request to register you for

the grou[ and to reply to the message to complete registration. Once you

do so, registration should be complete. Let me know if it doesn't work for

some reason.

Hi

Of course can lurk and I too hope we'll have some boys join. As

long as he seems develpomentally on the same level as the other kids, I

don't think we'd have to boot him off the list on his birthday. Hope he

decides to join us.

Thanks Kathy M! It's funny how my twins are apparently " level " with

their intellectual age, I guess, as they do well in school. It's

just that emotionally and behaviorally they seem soooo young, still

elementary age! I was watching them play with a neighborhood kid in

2nd grade (but as tall as my who's in 7th and very short!) and

marveling at how age didn't seem to matter. The dad said he may

invite them over to play with his son sometime - so I guess he

noticed too. Then again, I can look at it like his 2nd grade son is

probably a little " mature " what with 2 older brothers. My 16 y/o is

embarrassed by them tho.

I may go ahead and subscribe for soon and show him how to get

into the group and then just leave it up to him about reading/joining

in. Thanks again!

Can you give me the address of the " other group for teenagers " - I didn't know

one existed. Also, are there any support groups like this for parents or

teenagers in the UK. Ibrowse through theses messages and although they give

some support and encouragement, some of the material, particularly relating to

healthcare/education systems and facilities available (and even the names of

medication) are different to ours in the UK.

Thanks,

Colin (N. Ireland)

My son would probably ( I need to talk to him about this) join in

a kids support group. He was absolutely fascinated when he discovered

that I had so many emails from OCDand parenting. He will be 12 in March.

Keep me informed about this support group.

  • 2 months later...

Kathy Mc, just wanted to let you know that enjoys the OCDKids

group. He's one of the lurkers and I haven't got him to post but,

what? maybe twice. Once to introduce himself I know. Anyway, he

really enjoys reading the others' posts.

I have to be there as he's too repetitive with the computer keys

and/or sometimes just ask me to do " whatever " on the computer while

he sits and looks. So I've gotten to read a few of the kids' posts.

And the 1 or 2 he did post, he dictated to me.

When I've mentioned a post I/he's read like " oh, you could respond to

that subject " he's always " later, not now. "

But I can tell that he DOES enjoy reading them. And I've even

repeated here at home what one of the kids mentioned about her OCD

homework about going through doors - something like " 1, 2, 3, 4 - I'm

going through the door. " has trouble with doors at times and

I'll say it and give a little shove before he's ready to go through.

I think he's sorry I read that post! He smiled the 1st time I said

it to him tho can't get him to say it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that even though he's not

posting, he IS enjoying reading the posts. And I hope eventually

he'll feel more comfortable posting. Thanks again for starting the

group!
