When I do squats, my shoulders hurt the most from the weight on them while legs ask for more I use proper form, but still it hurts. Do u have any idea how can I make the pain go away from my shoulders so I can better exersice my legs? Thank you Al Krinker Fairfax, VA Al is the pain from a shoulder problem, at the rotator cuff? or is it just discomfort from the bar? You might try a wider grip or put some muscle in the shoulder area with shrugs, high pulls, hise shrugs etc. You might also try a manta ray. If it is just discomfort, remember a little pain never hurt anybody Best wishes Mike us mp1463@... St Louis Mo
Guest guest
By shoulders, do you mean your delts hurt or your traps hurt? Is it a muscular pain or just from the pressure? If it's muscular and it's in the delts, then it's the same problem almost everyone has when they start. The problem is flexibility. It will go away with time. For now, either take your grip all the way out to the collars or bite your tongue and take it. If it's from the pressure, you need bigger traps and rear delts. For now, either wrap a towel around the bar or bite your tongue and take it. Dmitry Voronov Ontario, Canada -------------- From: elik_from_uva I am new here. Just want to ask you a quick question. Thank you > > > Al Krinker > Fairfax, VA > It all has to do with bar placement and adaptation of the shoulders to carrying the load. Where do you place the bar? Where do you place your hands? How long have you been squatting and how often do you do it? How strong are your traps and neck (scapulae stabilizers)? It sounds as though your hands are too close and your shoulders are not used to the load. Everyone hurts when learning the low bar placement, which is best for protecting the spine. Answer the above questions and I can assist you further. Mims Dothan, AL > > __________________________________________________

Using a towel increases the distance between the lumbar spine and the barbell therefore increaseing the moment arm and force about the axis of rotation- when I've seen beginners perform squats like this I think they are at greater risk for lumbar spine injuries. Also, it is difficult to pinpoint the centre of the bar when using a towel because the towel can shift as you un-rack the weight. The towel can lead to problems. As far as pain with a bar on the shoulders the only symptom I would be weary of is pain on the spinous processes of the lower cervical vertebrae (i.e. C6 or C7). If you put the bar too high on your shoulders it is easy to bruise these structures and not only is it very painful but it can lead to problems in the future. In the mean time, do some shrugs, some rows, and be patient. I guarantee it will get better with time. It is very common for lifters to experience pain in the tissues that support the bar (e.g. clavicles during front squats, shoulders during back squats) when first starting these exercises.
