well honestly my Seneca does it about 90% of the time. And like I said unfortunatly I only have her 4 days a month so if she does have any other problems I really haven't noticed. But the hair pulling is extremlly noticicable beings how she has bald spots.

well she's been pulling out her hair since she was about 1 1/2 yrs old. He thinks I'm just pariniod, but I truely believe I've finaly found out whats really going on with her. To be perfectly blunt he's just an a-hole. her bals spots take up the entire sides of her head. My ex-husband is more then calosed to her needs. All the doctors I have taken her to have pretty much writen it off. Whether from lack of knowledge or something to that effect. Thru the divorce the judge had ordered 2-3 weeks of visitation with me here in nevada and because I couldn't afford an attorney it got me in trouble. I didn't know I needed writen consent as long as I had his verbal consent to come up for halloween and bring her back with me for Thanksgiving. Since he had an attoreny he advised my ex-husband that he could win the custody battle by stateing that I kidnapped her to the authorities. needless to say I did 8 days in county jail and recieved a $3,000 fine and 2 years probation for a felony because it was accross state lines. Since then he contacted my probation officer and told him that he was in fear of his life and requaired no contact what so ever for any reason. so I really dont know whats going on in my daughters life for the past 1 1/2yrs. So thats why I cant contact him in any way to let him know about what I've found out about our daughters behaveural problem. I'm at wits end. And desperate for any help i can get, because I'm in this battle for her alone.

Hi and welcome!

My name is Terry and I have a six year old named Ben who has OCD.

I've only been with this group for a couple of weeks. I've found a

lot of information through this group and even more support! Check

out www.trich.org to find out more about the specific form of OCD

you're refering to - re: hair pulling. The site also has resources

and support groups etc. Also check out www.ocfoundation.org for more

information on OCD. This will give you a good start on finding out

information. We began our " journey " with our pediatrician, but I

believe not everyone on this list has had pediatricians who were

willing/able to reconise the anxiety disorder?

Have you asked your pediatrician yet about the hair pulling? Let us

know more and what area of the country/world you are from!

Terry from upstate New York

hello again, my name is and I'm from Las Vegas, Nevada.

And I have'nt had a chance to take my Seneca to a pediatritain yet

beings how I only watched the program last night and it got my mind

raceing. Also because I've gone thru a horrible divorce with my ex-

husband and lost custody of her because he ran to the state of Utah

and filed for divorce there and i couldnt afford the traveling

expences that exceded aprox. $1,800 a month and pay for an attorney.

Long story... LOL... needless to say I only have my beautiful Seneca

4 days a month.I have however brought up many times to many different

doctors I have taken her to for check-ups and such and they have all

said basicly " she's going thru a faze " . And I ignorantly left it at

that. Untill last night watching the program it was as if they were

talking about my daughter, hair pulling, ect. And although I cannot

contact my ex-husband (for legal reasons), he would simply tell me Im

parinoid once again.... LOL ... paart of the reason we couldnt get

along. I will admit that I maybe over protective, but atleast this

time I wasn't just over reacting ..LOL. So basicaly I'm in this

alone. So theres a little insight to our little world ...LOL.

Hi !

Besides the other sites mentioned, one more is:

http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Articles.html

Has a couple articles on hair pulling.

The hair pulling does sound like OCD but I'm just a parent. Does she

do this all the time, absentmindedly or just when under stress? I

hope you can find some treatment for her soon! The OCD Foundation

site someone mentioned has lots of info. Does the hair pulling seem

to be her only problem?

I have a 12 y/o son who has to get that " just right " feeling

for things he does. It's caused problems at home and in school but

he's improved since OCD sort of suddenly " hit us " last fall.

There are so many experienced parents in this group, who are GREAT

about answering questions from all their varied experiences. I've

found searching the archives helpful too. Good luck and keep us

posted on Seneca!

Hi again !

Wow, you've been through a lot, still going through a lot it sounds

like. I'm divorced with 3 sons living with me.

It would seem like if your daughter is actually leaving some bald

spots, however small, a doctor would be concerned and not just

consider it a phase she's going through. I guess they think the

divorce and everything upset her; was it recent? Did she just start

it since? Are you allowed to " write " to your husband, as in send

him some info on the trich (hair pulling) without a note or anything?

Maybe in the meantime you can find someone who knows OCD in your area

and make an appt to take Seneca for a time when she'll be with you.

Then if she's diagnosed, the doc could contact her father. Just some

ideas; or would her dad be upset with you for doing that?? Divorce

IS tough/complicated sometimes!

Well, my sons are calling! Keep us posted on you and Seneca!

Judy,

I have tried everything imageinable to stop her from sucking her thumb. I've done the same thing , about promiseing her "specail rewards" for stopping sucking her thumb. Nothing works. I've also tried tobasco hot sauce, nothing works. I now understand why, even when i can see in her face how disappointed she is with herself. But my main concernee isnt the thumb sucking, its the pulling out her hair that worries me. Witch one fallows the other. But thank you for the advice. :)

I was a severe nail biter all my life (thank God for acrylic nails), so I understand completely. When I first heard about medication for obsessions, I desperately wanted to take some, but my physician thought nail biting was too trivial to medicate. My son, in addition to thumb sucking, also did the nail biting. But since he is successfully medicated (Celexa does the trick), his nails look great.
