Guest guest
I am familiar with a number of the top football programs in the country, and Nebraska does nothing revolutionary. Basically they train football players in the same way that 90% of the country does. Go to Huskerpower.com if you don't believe me. They have great sucess because they recruit great athletes. An athlete that gets stronger will more likely than not become better than if his strength did not increase, however gauging a football players ability(or a schools strength program) by the amount of wt that is squatted is ludicrous. I attended a Big Ten University and our coaches wanted big Squat, bench, and fast 40 times, our athletes, including myself achieved those. The numbers were worthless, as squat depth was often cut, the bench form included bounces and butts in the air, and our 40 times were considerably faster than when the pro scouts tested us either on pro day or at the combines. In talking to other major college players, this is pretty much the norm. Basically the numbers generated by these programs are pretty worthless. The more emphasis that a school places on these numbers, the more bogus they usually are. The best way to judge a football player is to watch him play football!!! A conditioning program for a football player needs to make him faster, stronger, more explosive, and more agile(not in that order). Not make him squat more, or bench 225 for more reps, or have a better 40 yd dash time. I get very frustrated having to alter an athlete's football conditioning program, because he has to bench 225 for reps, or run 16-110's when he reports to camp in July.
