Guest guest
I have been holding off posting on this for the simple reason that I live this topic everyday. I am a secondary school pricipal. Our school includes a junior and senior high school. There are 1400 students and about 100 teachers. I was very interested in reading the various posts because they were so similar to our situation. Here are a few brief points taken from my experience: 1. The core problem is that there are no longer any moral foundations in the educational system. To be more specific: there is no longer any sense of right or wrong. One parent asked me " who are you to tell my kid what's right and what's wrong? 2. The disintegration of community identity and the rise of unbridled individuality. In other words: no " us " , only " me " . 3. Parental interference. A friend of mine did his MA thesis on parental involvment in schools and found that the two most common reasons were protecting their own problematic kids and hoping to cash in on their involvement when they run for local office. 4. Parental incompetence and guilt. Today almost all families have both parents working. They communicate less with their kids and feel guilty. They throw their guilt on the schools. 5. Populist politicians and school boards. 6. The low status of teachers in society. The low pay results in less talented peaple entering the field. A disproportinate amount of woman teachers is also a result. I could go on but I will stop here. O.k. - can we get back to training, my anchor of sanity?
