Guest guest
The more posts I read on " modern intellect " and " childhood obesity, " the more these two subjects seem to converge. I recall reading a sad article some years ago in a national news magazine about the plight of unwanted children in a poor section of a large South American city. The parents, not being able to feed or clothe them, simply turned them into the streets to fend for themselves. An interview with one of the Catholic priests who was trying against desperate odds to help was interesting. He said that many of these children simply didn't stand a chance because due to lack of proper nutrition their brains had not developed properly and although they should have been of normal intelligence, they were not. By looking at obese children, one assumes they are far from starvation's door. But wait -- what are they eating? They may have plenty of calories, but a lack of nutrients. The bones and musculature are not the only part of the body that require a thick nutrient bath to develop properly. Just because they are fed well as infants doesn't begin to address the problem. How many little tiny kids are taken to fast food joints on a daily basis? To some children, a vegetable means french fries. Statistics keep saying that the life span is getting longer, but if certain of current lifestyles continue, possibly it will reverse itself for the average couch potato. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Rosemary Wedderburn-Vernon Marina del Rey, CA IronRoses@...
