Marla's Flylady system is so great for keeping the household running sanely, I've been very interested in what she has to say about weight control and fitness. Just haven't had the money to order the book when I'd think of it, nor the sense to remember it when I did! <SNIP>Also, for you Weight Watchers out there... I do core. I lost 25 pounds on flex and lost it extremely slowly (7 1/2 months). When I switched to core I lost over 2 lbs the first week, surprising myself and learning that I have to add flex points to maintain. When I watch my portions, listen to my body and exercise regularly I can maintain easily and by cutting back on the flex points (you get 35 in loss mode, more when you're maintaining) I lose quickly too. I did eat all my activity points too.Wow, this could be the answer for me! I've been doing Flex since the beginning, and my loss is glacial... it averages only .8 of a lb per week. Besides being frustrating as heck, it's getting *expensive!* I'm going to start Core this week when I weigh in on Thurs, and also print out your paragraph above and make it a mantra for a while! Exercise is also an absolute key for me in maintaining. I don't think I'd be able to sustain this weight without lots of healthy movement. Amen and AMEN!! Exercise has been the magic ingredient for me, too. I don't know why it's so hard to accept that moving one's body is just as vital as feeding it, but it sure took me the best part of my 46 years to accept the fact! Now, I realize that all this is sorta like a three legged stool-- cardio, nutrition and weightraining are all crucial. Remove any one of them, and the other two aren't going to do you much good. To stretch the metaphor, ;-) mind/spirit/emotions make the seat-- remove that and there's really no point in working on the " legs " either. Thanks again for a VERY helpful post!Tess

Guest guest
I'm 4'11" (and 3/4) and most people use the word "tiny" when they describe my appearance! Not petite, but tiny. Other people around my height have different builds and this weight might not work at all well for them, just like it might not work for someone 5'2" even though it might be within a healthy range for your height. When I was 15 I was probably closer to 150 (or higher, I didn't get on the scale back then). I've found through much trial and error that I really do look and feel best at the weight I'm at now. According to WW I can weigh as much as 128 but that I don't look good at that weight (or feel good). I can also go as low as 102 but I think I'd look and feel really awful at that weight too so yes, this is working really well for me. I can maintain it and am happy with what's going on for me right now. Thanks Carolyn!!! Re: the scale and its tales nancydewolf wrote:> I was really upset last week. Guest guest
Good thought Carolyn, I'm just learning how important flexibility is too. When I was trying to get the weight off this week I deliberately put a cardio workout in place of my yoga workout but don't want to do that on a regular basis because the flexibility I was gaining through it made other workouts better and made me feel really good too. I need to learn how to do some of those really strenuous yoga workouts so that I can get cardio and flexibility in one workout! :-) Re: the scale and its tales Lethe Loupe wrote:> If you don't mind, please let us know what you think of Body Clutter. > Marla's Flylady system is so great for keeping the household running > sanely, I've been very interested in what she has to say about weight > control and fitness. i havent read any of the flylady stuff for some years, however, i do have her body clutter book on reserve at the library. apparently it is on order or in cataloguing or something. could be quite a while before i get my hands on it.> Now, I realize that all this is sorta like a three legged stool-- > cardio, nutrition and weightraining are all crucial. please add another leg to your stool and include flexibility training! while it might not be essential for weight loss, it is an essential ingredient to fitness.:*carolyn. By the time my brain gets the message, my mouth's done outstripped the mark by a long shot. <G> Definitely eating slower makes a big difference. Also, start with smaller portions, try to eat them more slowly really enjoying them. Some people will eat half of what's on their plate then stop, rest and assess whether or not they are hungry for more. Other things that help are eating only at the table, not standing up at the sink, not while on the phone and especially not while watching TV. If you're distracted you're likely to not notice signals your body is trying to send you.If you don't mind, please let us know what you think of Body Clutter. Marla's Flylady system is so great for keeping the household running sanely I'm putting this on my to do list for as soon as possible. I promise! <SNIP>Also, for you Weight Watchers out there... I do core. I lost 25 pounds on flex and lost it extremely slowly (7 1/2 months). When I switched to core I lost over 2 lbs the first week, surprising myself Wow, this could be the answer for me! I've been doing Flex since the beginning, and my loss is glacial... it averages only .8 of a lb per week. Besides being frustrating as heck, it's getting *expensive!* First, let me say that .8 per week is actually very healthy! It is slow, frustrating (and expensive) but it is not unhealthy at least. WW and others say healthy weight loss is between .5 and 2 lbs. per week (with many people losing more than 2 lbs the first couple of weeks and it tapering off after). Regarding speeding it up though, I heard at my last receptionist training session that more people lose faster on core than flex but many people are so intimidated by what they perceive as less structure (no counting and trying to learn your body's real needs and signals) that they do flex. I also found that on flex I was looking only at points and playing games like, if I don't drink that glass of milk I'll save 4 points I can use on a brownie! I was eating the right amount of points but a lot of it wasn't the most healthy choices and I've been told that didn't exactly help my weight loss efforts either. Some people can eat really healthily on flex and now that I realize how much better I feel eating healthy foods I'm sure I can too but back then, no way.I'm going to start Core this week when I weigh in on Thurs, and also print out your paragraph above and make it a mantra for a while! Oops, I deleted that part in an effort to shorten my response. I'm glad you found it helpful though!! I have heard leaders tell members if you're stuck on a plateau change something major. For many people that means trying core for a week (or trying flex if they're on core but usually it is the other way around). I've also heard add an extra workout a week or change your workouts (your body might get too efficient at certain things if that is all you do). If you're on flex too, and you're not already eating all your activity points and possibly your flex points too try that. Your body will hold onto fat if it thinks it is in starvation mode and a lot of heavy exercise and not enough food can throw it into that mode. If you give it the fuel it needs then it might be able to use it more efficiently and you'll lose weight. And here's a wild thought... are you certain the weight you're trying to get to is what your body does best at? I don't remember how much more you want to lose but as I recall it wasn't much. Is it possible your goal weight is not the most appropriate for you? If you attend meetings you might want to talk with your leader about it or your doctor even. Just another thought to add to your brain but as with everything else I write, feel free to throw it out if it doesn't fit! :-) Thanks again for a VERY helpful post!Tess You are so welcome, thank YOU for the feedback on my thoughts! Guest guest
I figured we were probably built differently. People freak out when they hear my numbers because it would be way too low for most people. I have slim shoulders, slim hips (used to think they were big and couldn't understand why I had such a hard time birthing babies, that was just fat apparently) and now after a breast reduction (a bonus with my mastectomy) I even have small boobs so it works for me. LOL at the muscle+fat comment, that's what I used to think it was with me (or convinced myself of anyway even though I was not working out at all and had a desk job). In your case I'm sure there's lots of muscle there but on me it just was an optical illusion of my own making! :-) Re: the scale and its tales nancydewolf wrote:> I'm 4'11" (and 3/4) and most people use the word "tiny" when > they describe my appearance! hi nancy! yes, we have different body shapes... noone thinks 'tiny' about me! my old grandpa used to call me 'sturdy' when he knew me when i was younger and i weighed only, like 110-115 lbs. i tend toward the muscular side, although my lower body is carrying most of my fat, so the muscle+fat make it pretty big.:*carolyn.
