Although delving into the minutae of squatting technique is advantageous for

an intermediate or advanced lifter who probably has one or two little

problems, it's too confusing for a beginner. Assuming the bar is positioned

correctly (I see too many people with the bar at the back of their necks

rather than on their lower traps), the best way to tell people how to do the

exercise is simply to say, " Envision yourself sitting down on a toilet. "

Everyone knows how to do that! It's one of the reason box squats can be so

effective. When you sit back and down, making sure that you keep the bar in

position, you've pretty much got the idea. Everyone's feet and legs are

going to be a bit different, and some people are going to have to lean

forward more so than others simply because their biomechanics are different.

That doesn't mean one should turn a squat into a good morning, but often

that's caused by too much of a load on the bar.
