Falling off the wagon

Ok...I'm having the HARDEST time staying on the program. I don't know

why realy....I did the first 12 weeks a couple of years ago like a

pro. Lost 48 lbs, and went from a size 14 to a size 4. Pretty

amazing.

Then, I got busy, and lazy, and slacked off, and I went back up to a

14 after a couple of years.

I have tried periodically to get back with the program...but to no

avail.

Recently, I had my gallbladder removed, and in 2 weeks, lost 14 lbs.

This was a good thing. I plan to start the program again on Monday.

Any suggestions to sticking with it? What do ya'll do to keep from

falling off after a couple weeks??

Thank you so much . I plan to check that site out. I think

it will be a good motivator. :)

Liz,

Remember " progress not perfection, " don't beat yourself up and get

right back on the wagon.

Do rewards work for you? I made a list of some rewards that would

motivate me, especially at the beginning. Maybe something new for

yourself, an hour to read uninterrupted, a movie? Actually write it

down and stick it in your workout journal.

I promised myself if I got thru the first week, I would order this

plush terry bathrobe I wanted. I ordered it like on day 4, so I

wouldn't have to wait too long and also to represent to myself that I

had faith in myself to finish the week. I did a couple of other

rewards, but by week 3 it wasn't neccessry (although after holiday

schedule upheaval some unauthorized eating, missed workouts, I might

need a little boost too). Anyway, for me that was the perfect

reward--I think of my challenge everyday when I use it.

Just be nice to yourself.

Liz,

You might want to ask yourself, " what is the PROGRAM you are trying to

stay on? "

Is the " program " a 12-week game, a race with an end, a moment within

the course of your life, or is the " program " a way of living and

planning ahead so that you have the life you love and reach the goals

you set for yourself.

Is the " program " a 12 week guideline/period of burning new habits, 84

days of habit building so that they become part of us, and then another

84 days of living to our potential, living life fully, and then another

84 days of habit building until the habits that support the life that

we love are ingrained and stronger than our old habits that made us

feel lousy about ourselves. We're building the muscles of strong

habits, not only strong arms.

This program (and WeightWatchers which let me here, and other my other

programs that support my being my best) is my foundation for living

healthy, it is not separate outside of me as a thing to do and then be

done. I know I will fall off the program because that is human nature,

to sabotage oneself. But how FAST I can get back to living healthy and

loving myself, a QUICK RECOVERY, that is a breakthrough from the pull

we have towards lethargy or whatever pulls us down. What we see from

athletes and actors is that they recover immediately, they don't stop

the action because they miss a line or a step.

LOL! Glad my post sucject title kicked your rear back into gear. :)

Maybe they will make that flavor of Doritos into a Wow! Potato

chip. I know that the Wow chips aren't really much better for me

than the regular ones, but I find it's a good snack on my free

day. :)

Thank you Candace! Come to think of it, the first round of the

program I did, I DID reward myself. Every few weeks, I would buy a

pair of pants, or a dress that I had been eying. That way, I had

clothes to wear all throughout my program. As I went down in size,

I also began giving my larger clothes to other people working the

program. My mother is significantly larger than me...and she was

also doing BFL. So as we would both lose dress sizes, I would give

her my old clothes that would fit her as she was going down in

size. So we both felt rewarded.

Thanks for reminding me about rewards. I think that will help! :)

I noticed that several people being interviewed did something called

Leanness Lifestyle, instead of BFL. What is the difference in that

program compared to BFL?

Also....and I may have asked this question a long time ago, but I have

forgotten the answer to it....what does everyone think of the BFL for

Woman, as compared to the original BFL?? I have read both books, and

can't decide which I like better, as they do have some distinct

differences....

Any input from some of you have have tried both??

Very good questions, Etana. I dealy, I would like to make this

program my way of life. Currently, I am addicted to caffeine. That

is and has always been mt major pitfall. I sufer very uncomfortable

withdrawl symptoms without it. I get terrible migraines,

unexplained nervousness and anxiety, and sometimes even feel shakey.

My main goal at the moment is weaning myself off that. Not

easy...but I know I can do it.

After that, my goal is to STAY off the caffeine. I think soda

intake has been my main source of weight gain over the years. If I

can kick the soda habit permanantly, everything else will probably

fall into place a bit easier.

One thing I have to remember, is not to indulge in the soda on my

free days. Because when I do, I go right back to my old habits, and

it makes the next week harder than it should be.

I have to say to everyone in this group...I TRULY appreciate all the

wonderful posts of encouragement, advice, and profound questions and

comments you have shared with me and everyone else. It really helps

me espially when I know there are so many women that are going

through or have gone through the same things I am experiencing right

now....and knowing that I can lean on ya'll for the support I

need. :)

Leanness Lifestyle is similar to BFL except quite a bit stricter,

rigid calorie counting, no free day, hours of cardio. It definitely

works if you can stand it. Some people thrive on that level of

discipline and some go completely bonkers and rebound binge out of

control.

I'm of the opinion that Pamela Peeke is the devil. LOL :-)

Here was my review of the book:

http://skwigg.tripod.com/blog/index.blog?entry_id=1088245

Click on the comments link in the lower right to read what a dozen

more people had to say about it.

There might be a few people out there who would find it useful or

motivating. In general though, her program isn't very specific or

effective and isn't in any way related to the original Body for Life.

She really seems to be telling women what they want to hear instead of

telling them what actually works. If you're not getting the results

you want, blame your gender, blame your age, blame your hormones, but

whatever you do, don't look too closely at her unbalanced carb-heavy

meal plan or her vague " workout " suggestions.

I really hate it when something gets dumbed down and painted pink for

the little ladies. Bill actually made hard work, sweat and

discipline seem rewarding and fun. And you know what? Hard work, sweat

and discipline WORKS! Bill made you feel proud and strong and

in total control of your transformation. He told you exactly what to

do, and made you eager to get up and tackle that hardcore program and

kick some serious ass because you knew the rewards were going to be

immeasurable. Meanwhile, Pamela Peeke is all like, " There, there dear.

You'll get used to the menopot. "

Way to go ! Get back in the saddle!! Just remember that the

faster the horse is galloping, the harder it is to get out of the

saddle; at least it hurts more than a trotting horse. *smile*

Is there an online site where one can get a general workup and/or

starter details of Leanness Lifestyle without buying a book or

subscribing to a program?

Thanks!

FYI, I just completed my FIRST challenge on Dec 25th, and didn't make

much progress overall (measurements stayed almost exactly the same, as

did weight), but I had decent eating habits and body comp stats to

begin with. Hrmph. I might actually need something tougher than BFL -

previously I was doing full-body weights at least 3 times per week, not

alternating upper/lower like BFL had me doing.

So perhaps if I want a program, LL is the thing for me!

You know its funny, the more it hurts is right! Everytime I eat

something thats a little suspicious boy do I feel it later. I was so

sick after eating the doritos. And the last thing I ate I shouldnt

have was mac and cheese. Just a regular size side serving since I

made it for my kids I thought I would cheat a bit and call it my

carb. I had to go take a nap for two hours and felt icky for the rest

of the day. Its so strange how now that I am eating a lot cleaner

when I dont I get so ill or have such horrible side effects but when

I was eating this garbage all the time I didnt. Scary....

I really think it is about crossing the Crossing the Abyss that Bill

talks about in his book. It truly has to be a mind set. I can

tell you I have tried all kinds of things out there to lose weight and

have lost weight but gained it back when I went back to my old habits.

Body For Life to me isn't a " diet " it is a lifestyle I have adopted. I

don't even consider doing anything until I have my exercise in. And if

for some reason on a Saturday the kids events come first I absolutely

obsess and think of nothing else until I have my exercise in. Do I have

setbacks and struggle ABSOLUTELY! But the one thing that sets " this

time " apart for me is that if I have a set back at lunch I don't use that

as an excuse to ruin the rest of the day. I am right back with it at

snack time. I don't try to play games and cut back what I eat for the

rest of the day because I am a binge eater and I have found if I just

follow the program I will not screw up anymore.

Bottom line it is all about your mind set. How important is this for

you?

You can do this!

Ah...it's one of Pamela Peeke's programs. That would explain the

difference between her version of BFL for Women, and Bill's original

version.

That's my BIGGEST pitfall I think. I have a VERY hard time not all

out binging once I've slipped up in the least. I figure I blew the

day, so why not eat everything in sight. Then the next day, I feel so

bad about binging, that I figure I'll take the rest of the week off

and start over the next week.....and the cycle continues. :(

After my surgery, my body completely cleansed itself from 2 weeks of

almost no eating. Now, I find that I don't want the bad foods as

much as before, and when I do indulge, even the slightest bit, I end

up have gastrointestinal problems soon after eating...sometimes even

before I am finished with my meal.

I'm hoping this newfound intolerance will be beneficial to me. :)

Michele,

Thank you for your reply. This is VERY important to me. Very. And

for many reasons. Not just because I want to look good (although I

do want that...LOL!)....but I want to be as healthy as I can be, and

have energy to keep up and even surpass my son in the energy

department.

Several years ago when I started the program, I really wanted to

make it a complete lifestyle for me...but after I fininshed my first

12 weeks with such amazing sucess, I somehow lost my way.

I have been pondering the last day or so as to why I quit. And the

only thing I can really think of, is that I was self concious

because I was so thin, and everyone was telling me I was almost too

thin, and not to get any thinner. And that maybe I should eat a

twinkie or two to look " normal " .

I know they didn't mean any conscious harm by their comments (as

they were all VERY supportive of me while working my first

challenge)...but their comments affected me none-the-less.

Anyway...I don't mean to ramble. Just getting some random thoughts

off my chest. I'm so appreciative of everyone here, and how open

and inclusive everyone is. Gives me a safe feeling, as if this were

some sort of haven for me.... :)

Oh, so true. I planned Christmas Eve & Day as free days (yeah, I

know, bad, but hey, this is a lifestyle change for me). Anyway, did I

feel bad, like really painful in my stomach and kind of hungover,

spacey. I do free days each week, and take advantage of them, but I

guess those days don't compare to 2 days in a row of rich foods. New

Years was fine--a few treats, but really in moderation and I feel

fine. I guess that's a good thing when your body wants good food.

That's a good topic...what are you all doing for comfort in stressful

times?

I have a few options handy, but am always interested in adding more.

Here are some quick and cheap alternatives from my list;

- foot rub for myself while sitting in a chair using one of those

roller things on the floor

- bubble bath

- deep and steady breathing for a few minutes with my eyes closed

- a BIG smile (my brain doesn't seem to notice whether I fake it or

not)I heard that the motion of smiling releases endorphins. Hold

and repeat

- shoulder and neck rolls, one direction and the other

- make a fist with one hand...press the knuckles into the palm of the

other hand and rub in circles or up 'n' down

- I say, " I am feeling ANGRY " or I am feeling SAD " Be honest and own

the feeling without trying to blame or fix...just name it and feel

it for a minute or two... " My feelings change "

- firm rubbing of the cartilage areas of my ears; gently tug them in

circles

- cup of hot tea or even just hot water

The massage ones are modified from books on accupressure. I know how

our pets love the touch...we can enjoy it too.

I fell off hard over the holidays! But I registered officially for the challenge

at the BFL site yesterday and today is the beginning of my 12 weeks. I will not

beat myself up over what happened, but am now starting at 190 pounds and OMG!

40% BF (according to the tool at http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php ) I did

order a moron ( to coin a phrase from Skwigg) but it hasn't arrived yet. Hubby

took my before pics yesterday. I am setting it as my background on the puter so

I have a daily reminder of how I don't want to look. I may put one on the fridge

as well.

So, I gained 3 pounds over the two weeks which really isn't too bad. I kept up

my workouts or it could have been worse. I am looking for a new treadmill

because the one I have you can't run or jog on - just walk. The roads here are

so covered with ice that it is treacherous to venture outside.

I am still trying to work out using the bowflex and the suggested reps and

increases. It is a little slow changing the resistance and my upper body workout

is really long (not that I have anywhere I have to be). If anyone has any

experience with BFL and the bowflex I'd love to hear froom you.

Here's to all of us - success in our efforts in the New Year. It is a new year

and time for a new way of being for me.
