Anne,

I don't know if I have posted this or not but my daughter is training a yellow lab to detect hypoglycemia. There are very few of them around and she went to a conference earlier this year where they spotlighted hypo dogs.

She got this puppy when it was taken from it's mother. They think dogs that work for scent should start younger than the other dogs. This pup has not been a problem at all. She was taking it everywhere when it was 6 weeks old. The pup, Mercy, is so calm and good that frequently, especially in restaurants people see her going out and remark that they had not seen her before. She responds with "that's the highest compliment you could give". She is trained to wear a vest identifying her. She knows when she has the vest on that she is "working" and the hardest part is keeping people from interacting with her. When she is working she ignores people, dogs or whatever. She uses a regular leash. I sure hate to see those other kinds of colors on any dog. The main trick to use in training in any situation is to let them you that you are top (dominate) dog and they will follow you.

She is 5 months old now and probably will be certified in another couple months.

Mercy Febuary 7. She gets bigger almost every day. I don't have a more recent with the vest on.

Betty

I seen them collars your talking about on the disabled training dogs they bring to the festivals in the summer up at the park... They are mostly golden retrievers like Sandy is, but they have the leash that around the nose and neck... They train the dogs here in town and bring them to the gatherings with lots of people so they get used to all kinds of distractions and people and others dogs...
