Why do you regret trying the GFCF diet?

>>I need to quantify it why I hate the diet

1. Sam has never regained the varied food choices he had before GFCF

2. His bowels got worse on it

3. I wasted time because everybody said thats what you have to do

4. It reminds me of feeling a failure because my child didn't have wows and I was at the time made to feel the only possible reason for failure was my incompetance

5. It split the family and hindered family activities

6. It ruined early communication attempts as we took away his words that were no longer available (PECS) - for months he did nothing but eat the replacements cards

What I personally gained frm dioing the diet was knowledge about food additives. MSG Aspartame and other stuff I probably wouldn't have learned had I not gone down that route.

We did see gains with CF in eye contact, feelings of pain normalising but no where near what we saw in gains coming off the diet with HNI.

We did do the diet at a bad time in terms of knowlegde - in those days you bought bags of sugar and prided yourself on making Marilyns cookies totally unaware of the sugar issues for the first 5 months of being on CF diet and this was before you were told to remove soy as well as G & C. So probably not a good example but thats my story!

The sugar lol, someone over there has a very sweet tooth indeed, I was delighted at all the puddings I was turning out, couldn't work out why just got worse and worse, complete nightmare, ofcourse he had Candida and I was feeding it like a woman on a mission with all the puddings which had followed all the spuds, carefully avoiding gluten that turned out not to be a problem at all!

The worse he got the more I baked

Mandi can you tell me what is HNI? Also we are on the diet and our son has bad candida - we don't give him yeast or sugar apart from pears - do we need to switch to scd or somethihg else? Your mail touched me as my son sounds very similar - hsi bowel problems haven't been helped by the diet at all and he did eat loads of foods very happily before - however removing casein did have a big effect.

thanks

Not Mandi but we didn't go the whole SCD diet, we did greatly reduce potatoes and high carb food though, now really doesen't much like potatoes thankfully, his Candida is well under control and he had for many yrs diahrea 4-5 times a day every day, now down to one normal solid BM.

Do you make the yeast free bread?

We also found cutting out fruit a huge help, I think he goes crazy on it anyway even without the Candida issue.

it means you bake with ground nuts and not flour, you can eat all vegetables

apart from potatoes, parsnips, yams, beansprouts, no grains are allowed so no

wheat, barley, corn, rye, oats, rice, millet etc, honey is used as sweetener not

sugar, homemade yoghurt is allowed but this has to be fremented for 24hrs as

it removes the lactose. All fresh meats and fish are allowed, no bacon etc

which have been preserved with sugar. Certain cheeses are also allowed.

it is definitely best to read the websites mentioned for food details but

thought

this may be helpful as a start. Basically the carbohydrates come in terms of

those found in single sugars ie fruit, honey, the above yoghurt and certain

vegetables, it is a very healthy diet, not easy, but it does get easier, and it

means (unlike with gfcf) you are not putting any strain on the gut so it can

focus on healing ( my take on the diet). It is not simply an elinination diet if

this

makes sense, there is a science behind it and hopefully in time as yuor gut

heals you can add back more foods. Basically you do not give the body

anything which it cannot handle, so for example in the beginning my son

could not have any apple ( bacame drunk on it ) now he can tolerate a little

cooked apple. Also the baked nutbreads etc were a problem but occasionally

now he can have these.

The hard part is that you HAVE to be prepared, ie there are no quick fillers

like you have with all the starchy food, worth it though, I hated all the

refined

processed flours with gfcf, felt so processed, hth, Josie
