Guest guest
They are so aggressive because many of them believe autism is an alternative way of being, they do not believe there is anything to "cure". It doesen't matter to them what the science is they do not think we should be trying to "cure" our children. I myself have run into a certain woman online who has accused me of not loving my child as I cannot accept him as he is, how can I love him and yet want to change him? They are totally and utterly barking mad, they choose to ignore the fact that most very severe children grow into very severe adults, always they have the story of someone who was so profound and is now a genious, married with kids and having a succesful life. Different is cool, yeah right, tell that to the person next to you in the supermarket when your child has just headbutted you whilst stirpping off his clothes. Guest guest
Someone wrote that a very anti-bio person on a French chatline had spoken more kindly of bio intervention after the latest genetic discoveries (of a brain/gut/immunity genetic mutation link). I can understand that people don't want to do bio-interventions themselves -- I can understand that people for whom authority figures (scientific consensus) are very important don't want to travel outside that. What I can't understand is the antipathy that biodoctors and bio interventions encounter. There seem to be loads of aggressive blogs on line ranting on about bio-interventions and proclaiming their author's determination to ignore them. Why bother? At the Awares conference there is a woman laying aggressively into Dr Karl Reichelt and Shattock and their opioid theory. I simply can't understand why get so aggressive about a theory that you disagree with. If you know in your own mind that it's wrong, why get cross? It's just wrong and in the end will be demonstrated to be so. There are aspects of complementary medicine that I find a bit peculiar -- as Karl Reichelt said " perhaps the scientific evidence for some of the things is not so strong " . Particularly if people are reporting that they work the question is what's happening why do they work or appear to work rather than shouting " they can't be working the science doesn't support it " . Anyway I'm really curious as to what other people think. Why does bio-medical stuff seem to incense some people? Sally
Guest guest
Sally, Some people are in the " neurodiversity " camp and are therefore wedded to the idea that, as there's nothing that's broke, there's nothing that needs fixing. There are also a few vocal and combative people who are (self- diagnosed?)adults who say they have autism or Asperger's who are intelligent and can have a conversation and write messages, but who do not have to live with and be responsible for a severely affected child. They assume we (parents) are making it up when we say how desperately difficult life is and how worried for the future. So they pathologise our attempts to help our children, because they imagine our child is just the same as they were at the age and we are wicked mummies and daddies in trying to change our child. (There are also some adults with autism who have wonderful insights that can be a great help to us all in understanding our children, such as Donna .) Also some people have tried an intervention or two, given up and for some reason have concluded everythiong's a waste of time. I find in my local NAS-affiliated group the existence of young children and of those severly affected who can't cope in mainstream, who have SLD is ignored!! Everything's geared up for " high- functioning " and asperger's. So we (the rest of us)don't exist. Truth is we're too bloody tired to go to meetings and so our voices aren't heard. Guest guest
His understanding wasn't great either, infact my next door neighbour at the time thought he was deaf as he would look at her blankly when she spoke to him. He used to line things up, stack things like dining table chairs, no language, destructive, bad sleeper, no pointing, etc. What he did was babble a lot, lots of gobbledygook, and always looking to connect, not the typical kid in the corner, co-operative but with lots of routines and dislike of change. The first improvement we had was the biggie of language, started with the odd embedded word amongst the gobbledygook, then echolalia and then sentences. From that he developed very pedantic language, like a little old man, and eye contact seemed to be worse in that when he talked he looked upwards as though searching for the word, and social skills were very poor. Most of his improvements just evolved and the things like dyslexia and social skills were addressed brilliantly at his current school, he just goes from strength to strength, he has been lucky. He definitely did not speak though until he was four and a half, which is why I always ask about kids who speak after aged 6 as my youngest is severe and still non verbal at age 9. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to this board and have been busy reading and digesting various ideas. What you said about your oldest boy not speaking until 4and half years interests me. Was his understanding okay even then? Sorry to bombard you with questions but i have a 3yr 4mths boy who is not speaking yet. I am not sure of how much he understands as he does not give feedback most of the time and then once in a while he gives you a most appropriate response. This whole thing is very confusing and frightening. Sorry for the ranting. Guest guest
This.....is very good! Re: OT -- human nature I had a paediatrician's view about this recently....apparantly we parents are ill-informed, adamant and desperate, lambs to the slaughter for people who want to fleece us.........so now you all know - please go back to your homes citizens, be quiet and invisible and do not bother all these important intellectual people whot has degrees and suchlike, it plays havoc with their scientific and intellectual ego, and we can't have that, can we? ! Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. That was very nice of you. Hearing from mothers like you give me hope that my boy will pull through. Kudos to all the wonderful mums/dads on this site. My son also babbles a lot and can be quite obsessive about certain toys but not long-term. He can choose a particular toy and hold on to it for a whole and then next day not touvh the toy at all.He is otherwise quite okay and no more aggressive than other kids his age. We have also had ear tests which all came out okay. Anyway i'llkeep drawing strength from parents on this site. I think you are all supermums/dads.I am not, but i'll copy you guys. Guest guest
I suppose everyone is singing to their own choir and those who think 'Different is cool" do not believe they or their children as the case may be, are chronically ill, just different. Guest guest
Whats 'cool' about being chronically ill? What a deeply ignorant perspective we are being peddled. --- Mum231ASD@... wrote: > > In a message dated 18/10/2006 10:22:58 GMT Daylight > Time, > Moroza-@... writes: > > Anyway I'm really curious as to what other people > think. Guest guest
Stick AWARES into Google and it gets you a Welsh Autism Conference. You need to register but it's easy. You need the papers section and then discussion. the paper is called " overinvolved parents " . Guest guest
Thanks Sally. Don't know how I missed that! Looks like a fascinating discussion. . Guest guest
The word " overinvolved " itself sends my blood pressure through the roof, guess I better give that board a miss then LOL. Guest guest
Yes, quite. I decided to stop myself from looking at it because it was bad for me. It's also got a very strong " there's nothing wrong with autistic people they are just differently abled " discussion document which gave me a wry smile. On the other hand it's the source of some lovely web games that I recommended to Mandi. Adam Feinstein runs it. He's the brains behind EyeQ -- the special cod liver oil Sally natasa778 wrote: > > The word " overinvolved " itself sends my blood pressure through the roof, > guess I better give that board a miss then LOL. > > Natasa > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I suppose everyone is singing to their own choir and those who > > think > > > > > > 'Different is cool " do not believe they or their children as > > the case > > > > > > may be, are chronically ill, just different. > > > > > > Vicky > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - > > > > > > > > > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > > > > > > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > > > > > > Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.10/491 - Release > Date: > > > > 23/10/2006 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - > > > > > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > > > > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > > > > Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.10/491 - Release Date: > > 23/10/2006 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.10/491 - Release Date: 23/10/2006 > >
