Guest guest
Morning Peta, I know very little about this but I have read/heard stories about massive doses of probiotics (apparently when they first hit the "possible ASD treatments list" parents were giving them up to 8 or 9 times a day) and they didn't cause any adverse effects. I think it comes down to observation of the benefits of giving the probios. From what I remember, giving so many probios didn't particularly reap any increased benefit, just made for a costly supplement bill! I would imagine that there comes a point of diminishing return where increasing the dosage doesn't cause any further gains. I know in my son, I can't even give him a whole capsule of any probio, he just gets horribly constipated so I guess the point of diminishing return for him is pretty low. I didn't seem to need to increase the dosage of probios with oxypowder but I guess again that probably varies according to child. Is there a standard or recommended amount of probiotics/ other supps that should be given with it? Can you give too many probiotics - we are just giving 1 serving of primal defense daily. We have just had 3 months of yeast problems and I don't want to go back into it again too soon.ThanksPeta

Sam never had constipation in his life till we started Culturelle. We rotate Culturelle in now but give 1/2 Oxypowder later that day to make sure he doesn;t get bunged up. He can handle 1/2 cap Culturelle without the back up once we have sroted the bugs FWIW Mandi x
Guest guest
This is something that has bugged me (haha) for a while now. I heard on one of the dan webcasts that probiotics can cause delayed gastric emptying so it is best to give them on an empty stomach. (an important bit of info for those with GERD) but what I have never been able to find out is whether probios cause DGE because they cause reduced gastric motility or because they interact adversely with food (presumably by delaying the breakdown). If they can cause reduced motility then this is a serious problem for some kids and of course could explain the accompanying constipation. (as, however, would gut bugs) anyway...if anyone has any thoughts on this that would be great... I know that has yeast troubles and we'll be tackling that soon so it's possible that's why the constipation with the probios.
