! I love that Web site -- it's one where I like to go often.

Yes, it amazes me how many ways there are to translate a passage. I

keep running into that while stumbling my way through trying to

translate some of Edmond Roudnitska's work. And also while reading

Baudelaire. I love to get the books where the French and the English

translation are printed side-by-side. It's fascinating to see how

people have done it so that it tries to faithfully capture the meaning

while still rhyming. What an art.

Here are two more short passages that I love:

------------------------------------

Over your flesh perfume drifts

Like incense 'round a censor,

Tantalizing dispenser

Of evening's ardent gifts.

------------------------------------

Many a flower unburdens with regret

Its perfume sweet like a secret;

In profoundly empty solitude to sit.

Cheers!

Andrine, I'm too a doble translated books addict, (like my mother :)

who was pretty good in English, she used to say that it is the

quickest and funniest way to expand vocabulary :-)

from this lovely website

on

my Baudelaire quote is Le Flacon

http://fleursdumal.org/poem/143

Le Flacon

so keen some fragrances, they freely pass

all barriers. they would pierce a wall of glass.

unlatch a coffer from the Orient

whose creaking hinge will scarcely grant consent,

or cupboard in an empty house, where murk,

sharp smells and cobwebs of a century lurk,

thou'lt find perhaps a flask that holds a host

of memories, free perchance a living ghost.

crushed in the gloom a thousand keepsakes lay

like coffined larvae there, which, quivering, grey,

released at last arise on soaring wing,

rose-flushed or azure, golden, glittering,

and swirling memories mount, to thrill and tease

our closing eyes; we reel in murk, as these

grapple amain and hurl the quailing soul

down to a Pit where human odours roll

and fell it on the brink that waits for all,

where, bursting, Lazarus-like, its rotted pall,

stirs and awakes the spectral visage of

a charming, fusty, weird, forgotten love.

so when Oblivion blots my memory dim,

and in a corner of a cupboard grim

I like cast off, a sorry flask and old,

crackled and dusty, viscous, green with mould,

I'll be thy coffin, lovely pestilence!

I'll prove thy power and thy virulence,

dear poison brewed by angels! dulcet fire

I've drunk, my life, my death, my heart's desire!

, Andrine, anyone interested - I think it's time the Files had a

section on Perfume Poetry. Could someone volunteer to gather all the

recent posts and look back in the archives for more? That person could

upload the file and be in charge of keeping it updated.

maybe we could be some 2-3-4 people, who could work together and turn

and turn ?

I come back from Perpignan (without easy internet access) augiust 19,

could not do it before, but would be interested as it would help me to

improve my English

Hi Anya, ,

I was going to step up and say yes, I'll do this, I'm on it... Then I

saw 's response about it helping her with her English. I don't

want to step on any toes or get in the way of your English work,

, so unless Anya would prefer that we get this started sooner

than the 19th, I'll let you decide how much of it you would like to do

and I can take the rest of it if you like -- whenever you want me to,

or if you want me to. How does that sound?

Cheers!

I just saw 's latest response - and the more the merrier! You can

work behind the scenes, maybe divvy up the years for the search, etc.

Start whenever, it's all open.

OK, two categories:

Poems

Quotes

I have a big file of quotes I've collected over the years. I'll email it

to both of you, if that's OK. It's a Word doc, all quotes are attributed

to the original source.

Hi Andrine and all,

Thanks for the lovely posts! Do you know who wrote these? I am putting

together a little art film with my husband on the poetry of scent.

Hi Katlyn,

Sorry about that. Those are snippets from Baudelaire - the first one

from Afternoon Song, the second from Ill-starred. What a lovely idea

for you and your husband to do that! Wow. I hope that we might be

able to see it when you're done. Do you think you might put it on

YouTube or anything?

Cheers!

Thank you Andrine,

I just created a file folder for scent poetry and literature for the

list. I'll get all the recent posts and what I have in my " Archives "

in there this week. It sounds like you have some wonderful sources so

please when you have time, post things there, or you can send them to

me to post.

My husband is a musician and we have wanted to do a project together

for awhile, It is wonderful to live in time where we may bring our

visions to life.

Yes, we were thinking of a YouTube link. It will be awhile to realize

fully, but have made a start.
