Guest guest
, have you considered a basic kickboxing workout dvd like Kickboxing for Dummies or the Trainer's Edge one I did with Violet something or other? Kickboxing is much easier than step because you're on a flat surface the whole time and there are just 4 punches and 4 kicks, whereas in step there are dozens of moves and the vocabulary is inconsistent. For example, in some parts of the country a "V Step" is called a "Wide Step". The move I learned as a "Revolving Door" was called a "180" today - it gets confusing until you've done it a lot!Anyway, you might like a basic kickboxing home workout, maybe even Turbo Jam! The starting set can be pricey, but it really walks you through things gradually and you can find it used on Ebay I'm sure for cheaper.I would encourage you to take that yoga class at the gym. I took yoga at 235 lbs at the gym and had to modify A LOT but no one made me feel clumsy or stupid. You can always rest in child's pose if you need to regain your strength, and join back in later. I would tell the instructor beforehand that you are new and maybe she can give you some pointers along the way. I would also try a variety of instructors because each one has their own personal style - some athletic, some more slow and spiritual, etc. Yoga makes me feel sooooooooo good every time I do it! Let us know if you take a live class and how it goes!Hugs,
Guest guest
Hi , I have not tried any kind of kickboxing because I assumed, apparently incorrectly, it would be even more difficult than step. Four punches and four kicks to learn sounds much more achievable! I love the way you describe step and the variety of moves! As much as I really enjoy the workout, the vocabulary with instructors I haven't worked with throws me first, then the variation on moves I know how to do, some of which are advanced moves that took me FOREVER to master, completely messes me up and makes me feel like a beginner all over again! If I were to try kickboxing, which I'm thinking I do want to try, which would be the best way to start? Kickboxing for Dummies, Trainer's Edge or Turbo Jam (and yes I know you're "prejudiced" to TJ but I also trust your honest judgment)? I've been reading all the glowing posts about TJ and have definitely thought about it. I'm an avid ebayer so looking for it there works great for me too! :-) The yoga class, by the way, is actually not through my gym, which I know from experience with other classes just won't work for me. It is through my school district's community education program (like a parks and rec program) at a business that only teaches yoga classes so I'm thinking I'll have a better chance of feeling successful there (and then maybe I can take the basic things I learn to keep going at the gym or with a tape if I want to). I'm pretty sure I'm going to sign up for it. Just gotta steel myself for DH's (good-natured, not being mean) laughter when I tell him about my latest "adventure" and then actually sign up... I think I can do it online... better do it before I lose my nerve!! :-) , have you tried kickboxing? , have you considered a basic kickboxing workout dvd like Kickboxing for Dummies or the Trainer's Edge one I did with Violet something or other? Guest guest
You will love yoga at your cozy community center! Do sign up! $65 is cheap, often it's $15/hour at a yoga studio..Yes, I'm partial to Turbo Jam. If you go that route, you will want to buy and use, in this order:1. Learn & Burn - to learn the punches and kicks and a few other signature moves2. 20 Minute Workout - a GREAT basic workout that gets you sweating, and also is good to use if you're pressed for time. If you enjoyed both of these, then get3. Any of the Cardio Parties. If you like all of these you'll be hooked and want the entire collection :-)If you want to pick up something toute de suite at Borders (if you sign up for their free rewards program you get great coupons almost weekly) you can get Kickboxing for Dummies, which I've never done but Collage marks it as a staff favorite. The Trainer's Edge one lacks personality, but from an instructional standpoint and beginner level standpoint I thought it was really good - very simple drills, and much like the 10 Minute Solution workouts you are only committed to about 10 minutes at a time. I did a review on it last week that goes into more detail. Ross Dress for Less is also a GREAT place to get workout dvd's for cheap - that is why Kathy, Donna and I are always broke!!!I got a 10 Minute Solution Pilates dvd there today as a matter of fact (as opposed to the Rapid Results Pilates one in the same series I got about a week ago *sigh*)So you see , in no time you will be a "Vidiot" like the rest of us, anxious to tackle new workouts and accumulate more and more and more and more!I'm almost excited to go to bed now in 30 minutes so that I can get up at 4:00 and do some Pilates!Bright Blessings, nancydewolf <nancydewolf@...> wrote: Hi , I have not tried any kind of kickboxing because I assumed, apparently incorrectly, it would be even more difficult than step. Guest guest
Okay, I'm getting off my butt as soon as I finish this and finding out how to sign up for the yoga class! Will tell DH after I do it, then at least the laughter won't make me feel less like doing it! :-) Thanks for the excellent information about TJ and the other videos! VERY helpful!!! (And also even harder to make a decision now... oh well, will work on it! Will go back and find your review on The Trainer's Edge too.) Sigh, no Ross here in Michigan! I checked and so did Jen. So sad. We do have a Border's very near my house though and I just signed up for their frequent buyer program! :-) Yes I think, with the proper advice and encouragement it won't take long for me to become as addicted (and broke I guess) as the rest of you!!! :-) At least I'll have company and it will be fun and healthy too!!! :-) , have you tried kickboxing? , have you considered a basic kickboxing workout dvd like Kickboxing for Dummies or the Trainer's Edge one I did with Violet something or other?
