Bee,

Plenty of good, home made yogurt (preferably raw) will help give the digestive

what he needs to help fight it.

83 year old father has diarrhea

Dear Group, Does anyone have any ideas on how to help my 83 year old

father get over the diarrhea he's had for 3 weeks. My mother is a

very conscientous cook, and has eliminated all grains, to start

with. If he's not better next weeks he'll be going to the

chiropractor, which is probably the best idea yet.

What do you all think?

TIA, Bee

Dear Janet, Thanks, that would be the best for him. I'll see if Mom

can get some raw dairy and make him some. She loves cooking. Isn't

diarrhea the body's effort to eliminate toxins? But it could also be

an imbalance in the flora fauna in the bowels as well, and good

yogurt would certainly help that.

That's great. Bee

I'd take a multi approach:

1. Take Pepto Bismol daily for 2 weeks. This gets rid of toxins from the bad

bacteria, and helps heal microscopic colitis, which is sometimes the problem. MC

can be a side effect of food not digesting, which can have multiple causes --

grains being a biggie, also fructose, casein, eggs, yeast etc. Also lack of

enzymes and lack of stomach acid, which at his age might be a given.

2. Go on a meat/veggie diet. NOTHING but plain meat (no deli meats, meats with

additives, corn beef, etc: Just cuts of meat, fish, or chicken) and vegies

(fresh whole ones, cut up and cooked if they need cooking). Soups are the best,

they are easy to digest (esp. with bone broths etc.). Potatoes are ok. Do that

with the PB.

3. Take probiotics and some enzyme like Bio-gest with each meal.

For a lot of people, this clears up the diarrhea. Then you can add foods back

gradually, one by one to see if they cause a reaction. Don't try more than one

food a day. Could be the probiotics and biogest will help him without a lot of

other food restrictions.

Thanks Heidi, you are a peach. That's a good list. I will pass that

on to my parents. I've been ill this week and so I'm not thinking

too well. Of course my mother is very upset and relies on me.
