Guest guest
hi all Eleanor has been suffering from high ammonia levels and has recommended that we start alpha ketoglutaric acid asap, because high ammonia causes long term neurological damage. It STANK! Apparently it's a by-product of bacterial overgrowth in the gut. I think it can be detected in an organix aswell if you're not sure, but better check that first! Josie x The only way I can describe the ammonia smell from poo is like very strong cat wee, or like you say, very old wee that has been sitting around for abit. There was no mistaking it, it nearly bowled me over it was so strong. But I think even a small amount would be fairly easy to smell, it's very distinctive. I think I'm trying to say it's poo that smells like wee. Joy x

Guest guest
Hey Joy, Just so you know, if you add AKG to ammonia, it will make glutamate, which is an excitotoxin. Increased glutamate receptors have been found in autism, meaning that there are more receptors on the cell surface to rbing the glutamate inside the cell. This is not generally good news. Have you tried lowering the high-quality protein in the diet a little bit? Guest guest
Another viewpoint. We had high ammonia, we used AKG, no problem, just improvements, lots of them, including lots less brain fog. Same for the calcium, we give lots, no problem there either, more improvements, especially since adding the K which allows it to get in. Nothing is true for all of our kids. Excess protein is not good, but restricting it below normal is not good either, protein is needed for recovery and neurotransmitter problems and thyroid functioning. Guest guest
Agreed, certainly no problem with excess glutamates here, although hate to say this as many times have said we don't have that problem here, only to get it, so won't say it :-) I got more than one good idea from reading some Yasko, however.
