Guest guest
Dear Liam, The reason their arguments make no sense is because they are just excuses. These people do not care about your son, just as the authorities here do not care about mine. They care about cutting costs and that is all. I wish I was in a position to offer real practical advice, I’m not but it seems to me that you need some clout behind you – a letter to your MP? A lawyer? Do you have an equivalent of PEACH there in Ireland or do PEACH cover Ireland? If so, are they offering any advice? This is a disgrace and they cannot be allowed to get away with it! Good luck! Sara If you think UK services are bad for ASD kids....... The government in the Republic of Ireland has just decided to cut funding to the majority of ABA progammes. My son was receiving 20 hours of ABA per week on a home tuition grant during school term time (I presume they think he's not autistic during the summer holidays??). I just got a letter today from the Dept of Education stating that this will be cut as his tutor is not a qualified primary teacher. Great, I'll just go out and hire a primary teacher with special training in autism. Like they grow on trees. The Dept doesnt have enough of these people, so where am I meant to find one? And even if I found one, what's he going to learn from them? Maths, spelling, how to speak Irish? He can't even say DaDa. Left to his own devices, he's end up in the corner of room, staring at a string and covered in faeces. What good is a primary teacher to him? This is so infuriating. He's been doing so well for the last few months and now this. Life is too hard for him as it is. Why do governments have to go and make it harder. I'm so angry. So tired. So depressed. This just isn't right. I had to rant. Sorry. Liam -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Liam, I don't know how many other autism lists you frequent, but I would try and find other Irish members who are experiencing similar diffculties and band together and make waves. I seem to remember there was a woman in the Republic who was very active in seeking more support from the Irish government..don't remember the name unfortunately. I wish you much strength.... Guest guest
Thanks for all the kind words. I've been busy contacting the local ASD lobbying groups and harassing politicians. I even managed to get invited onto a talk show on national radio to vent my frustration. No progress to show for it, but I guess it's just a case of keep on trying. > > Liam, > > I don't know how many other autism lists you frequent, but I would try and find other Irish members who are experiencing similar diffculties and band together and make waves. Guest guest
What Ireland needs is its own forum or some such to discuss things pertaining to the law in Ireland. Guest guest
Hi Liam On hols in Mayo here - have you thought about contacting keith Duffy - I'm no Boyzone fan but in a celebrity obsessed culture as in UK and Irl a profile can help in highlighting issues. Also Aidan Quinn is filming in dublin at the moment and his daughter in USA is autistic.... Anyhow best of luck, but must admitt one reason we won't return to Irl is the lack of services compared to UK, which is far perfect anyhow. Regards > > > > Liam, > > > > I don't know how many other autism lists you frequent, but I > would try and find other Irish members who are experiencing similar > diffculties and band together and make waves. Guest guest
I haven't seen it in the news anywhere, but then I don't have time to read newspapers these days. It's 2.00 am and this is my first chance to get on-line today!! Too busy lobbying people. I know that at least one politician (Kathleen Lynch) has issued a statement condeming the cuts. And I've had promises from several other politicians that I spoke to that thie issue will be discussed with the Minister. I've had 3 of the 166 sitting TDs (Irish MPs) agree to look into it. Unfortunately, its come at a really bad time for me as well. I'm supposed to be heading off on hols on Monday for a week. 5th wedding aniversary and we're getting our first break from the kids in a long, long time. I booked the holiday months ago and now I'm not even sure if I should go. I can't afford it either now, but it was pay in advance with www.lastminute.com. Hopefully, we can go and still stay in touch via phone and e-mail. Also, I know several of the ASD support groups are moving on this, so maybe it's time to let them fight this for a bit. I need a holiday from autism.... > > > > > > Liam, > > > > > > I don't know how many other autism lists you frequent, > but I > > would try and find other Irish members who are experiencing > similar > > diffculties and band together and make waves.
