I think it's largely a myth. True, if you lose a lot of weight very fast, you'll look haggard and possibly have loose skin-- but that's because you've either done something very unwise to lose a lot of weight fast and so you're mal/under nourished or you've had some sort of surgery and lost weight so fast your skin wasn't able to rebound fast enough. Or, some combination of both.

Lose weight the gradual wise way, through good nutrition and exercise, and your skin will rebound better and it'll also take on a nice healthy glow. Personally, I look at pictures of myself from a year ago, when I weighed 180+ and was at about 32 BMI, and I look a lot older then than I do now at 138 lbs and 24 BMI. (I'm 46, btw)

Triple chins, jowls, a pasty complexion, depression and big matronly gut and hips will age anyone. LOLBesides, I'd rather be slim, strong and healthy with this upbeat attitude fitness has brought me, even if it made my face a little more lined (and I can't see that it has!). Vigor, strength, health, confidence and cheerfulness are always youthful traits, regardless of what the face looks like, imho. Too, always wear sunscreen and don't smoke-- those are the two biggest wrinkler-makers out there.Tess-- "...I am too many this morning..." Lessa ~Dragonflight~

Hi,

Personally, I think you only look " old " if you are at

or close to an unhealthy weight-range and you are

" older " - (a young person in their 20's and even early

30's can be stick thin and still look young - but once

you start getting into the mid-30's, 40's, etc. if you

are really stick thin it does have an aging effect -

but really, only if you are too thin or borderline -

look at Jari Love in her first video - when she is

thin already to her later videos when she is getting

even thinnner!) I'd say if you're aiming for a

healthy weight you won't look older, but if you're

aiming for stick thin and you're not a teenager or in

your 20's anymore don't sacrifice your face for your

a$$ and keep it at a healthy range.

A good example of a before/after picture is our good

friend 's - she easily looks 10 years younger in

her after picture!

i don't think its so much as say if you drop to low in

Body Fat. in cathe's hardcore she was quite low body

fat wise and with the fake tan it made her look much

much older then her other workouts. same with some

fitness competitors that drop to low body fat. they

lose alot in their face as well as body, it will make

you look dull and older. but just overall weight loss

should't make you look older. you should appear more

youthful b/c of energy and exercise does help with

glow of your skin too. my face looks alot younger then

i really am. nobody believe i am almost 30.

people don't guess that - most are guessing early 30's

- so being fit does help!

Mostly a myth, but there are parts of the body where the skin doesn't shrink as fast after a certain age. As I found out losing weight in my 40s. But you still look younger, not older, if you lose it gradually. Anne Weight Loss - is it a myth or a fact??? If you lose a lot of weight you will look older....is this a myth or fact? Losing weight slowly AND exercising is the best way to help make sure your stretched out skin doesn't sag too much (making you look old). On my Weight Watchers Lifetimers boards some report people thought they looked haggard when they lost all the weight because they had actually gone too far and lost too much. I've lost 25 pounds and look and feel great but because I wasn't exercising while I was losing weight I can see flabby, empty skin on my stomach, arms and legs that I want to tone. If I lose much more though I can see myself looking haggard, cheeks too drawn in, and not enough energy. I'm turning 40 in a few weeks too so I'm excited to say I look better now than I did a few years ago (and I'm actually at a lower, healthier weight than I've ever been in my life). Also, with extremely low or no fat diets (like WW core program) you do need to make sure everyday that you get some healthy oils (2 teaspoons worth) because they make your hair, skin and nails more healthy all of which can contribute to a healthy glow or a haggard look if you're not getting the essential elements from those things.

I'm not a dietician so this is just a mixture of what I've learned and experienced, your doctor or dietician is always your best source of info on weight loss and health though!
