That was a beautifully written email about the Rabbi and the content of his message. It seems he is correct. I find it comforting, not depressing. We hear the opposite everywhere though, most recently from the quantum physicists and THE SECRET, who insist that we create our world with our thoughts. Josie

Josie-

I wasnt ever a huge fan of the " oprah-esque " " new Age-y " philosopy

of " if you can dream it, you can have it etc... " when I was

thriving and had a business based upon my loves in life. But, it

felt good to think that i somehow had deserved the outcome of

positive thinking. I had that smug little feeling of

having " manifested " my wonderful life.

BUT

I didnt stop being positive. I didnt stop loving my work. I really

didnt suddenly decide to fail. I lost my health and everything Id

worked for and my whole world fell apart due to CFS.

I didnt wish CFS upon myself. I didnt decide to see what it was

like to feel dead... it just happened to me.

There are all sorts of ways to look at life with all its twists and

turns. Whatever rocks your boat, you know? But I walked out of a

drs office after she told me if I just loved myself more, then I

wouldnt have gotten sick.

I looked at her for a second, then said, " I dont think that you and

I are going to work out " and left. What I wanted to do was launch

myself across the desk and strangle her. But I guess that would be

perceived as a bit of negative behavior ....hmmmm?

There is a very prevalent " Blame The Victim " mentality towards

people with illness in our country, because it is SO much easier to

simply assume that I either did or didnt do something - thus got

this illness. As in right down to thinking I somehow didnt " think "

the right thoughts, so I got sick.

Sorry.......... but, no.

The opposite of this has also happened to me. I am one of the few

and rare people ta recover -as much as I have- from this illness.

When a friend said, " Well, you did more than others did and you used

your positive thoughts and became healthy again " I wanted to launch

myself across HER desk and throttle her too!

I did NOT do anything better, bigger, more right, didnt think nicer

thoughts, feel less depressed to get better. I believe that I

simply have a subtype that responds to what I happened to have been

treated with. Thats all. Thats it.

I totally lose it when I ever hear " Blame the Victim " crap, even

when its all wrapped up in pretty pink " new age " wrapping paper of

philosophy. And especially when it has to do with victims of crime

and rape, which we also like blame with their bad fortune.

sorry for the rant, this is a sore spot for me.
