I think we all have been caught by surprise by this earthquake as it is a rare event in the UK but thank God, nobody has been too badly affected and it only lasted for a few seconds although it is still a frightening experience... We did hear about the power outage in South Florida too and it seemed to create a total chaos on the roads... How are things now? That sounds quite disturbing to me, a Chicagoan, who has never experienced an earthquake or even a small tremour. I could just see my shelves of absolutes and tinctures crashing to the ground in a heap with years of perfumery work gone in one fell swoop! Hope that everyone in U.K. is O.K. My materials are all in drawers... but I must admit, if we had a big shake up here where I am, near Shasta Dam, I'd be as worried about the dam cracking as my shelves falling. At least I'm up in the foothills, and would be above any flooding. As a teen I lived in Monterey, on the central coast of California. We would feel quakes there from time to time, as we weren't too far from the " infamous " San s Fault. Whenever the family left for a trip, my mother would insist on moving the sofas and chairs in front of her prized glass-fronted antique hutch, jamming every pillow in the house against it, just so it wouldn't fall over if there were to be a quake. Needless to say, with all her precautions, the hutch still exists intact today, residing with one of my brothers. I'm sure the many other listmembers who live in California would have their own stories. in far northern California
