Hey there, I have had certain distillations that have started to yeild a gunky, heavy, blobby, dark " oil " after about an hour to an hour and a half of distillation. This gunk always separates to the bottom of the " good " essential oil layer - this being the oil that you should be separating from the gunk and bottling. One should never sell the gunk. I am not sure, but I hypothesize that this heavier, later element of distillation is a product of less volatile constituents breaking free from the plant matter. The gunk always smells more resinous to me, and has a deeper fragrance that is less fleeting in nature than the light EO floating above it. Any other distillers with info on this? I have seen this " debris " - like oil layer with rosemary and cedar, and even a little bit witht he spruce I distilled - I just keep it for personal used - rub it on my feet, ya know.....anyway - I would definitely send that bottle back - you never know what the hell it might be.
