Hi Everyone!

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a member who said that AVG (a free antivirus software that we previously recommended for members) had decided to go to pay only versions. I said I would look into a reasonable alternative for us. I found it! It seems to be easily customizeable and also acts well with most antivirus software. The only problem seems to be with zone alarm. I've just downloaded this one myself, and it is highly recommended by several computing magazines. Here is what download.com says about it:

Avast Home Edition is a complete ICSA certified and Secure Computing Magazine awarded antivirus software for home noncommercial use. Avast includes the following components: On Demand Scanner--with skinnable simple interface--just select what do you want to scan in which way and press the Play button; On Access Scanner--special providers to protect the most of available e-mail clients; Instant Messaging--ICQ, Miranda; Network traffic--intrusion detection--lightweight firewall; P2P protection for Kazaa, BitTorrent; Web shield--monitors and filter all HTTP traffic; NNTP Scanner--scans all Usenet Newsgroup traffic and all operations with files on PC; Boot Time Scanner--scans disks in the same way and in the same time as Windows CHKDSK does.

So, if you would like to download this software, please visit http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10634953.html?tag=lst-3-4

and click on download now.

I'm not sure that AVG has stopped its free version. I just had a look

at their site, grisoft.com (and also free.grisoft.com, the home site

for AVG Free Edition) and while it does say that they're no longer

supporting an earlier release of AVG Free (7.1), there is AVG 7.5 Free

Edition available for download.

I don't see any mention about AVG planning to discontinue providing a

free version of their anti-virus...
