I'm wondering what exactly are the differences between taking a high

quality fish oil vs high quality cod liver oil? I seem to find pros

and cons for both. Should one be taking some of each?

Thanks

Lynn-

The pros and cons depend on what you want out of them and on your

perspective on PUFA. Fish oil has much less of the fat-soluble vitamins

and more omega-3 fatty acids. CLO has much more fat-soluble A and D and

somewhat less PUFA. I'm guessing that fish oil needs to be balanced by

butter just as much as CLO if not more, because of the PUFA issue, though

perhaps any highly-saturated fat would do in the case of fish oil.

Personally, I find even CLO has too much PUFA. It puts me to sleep,

literally. But some people can certainly benefit from it, though they

absolutely should be mindful to have it with a lot of butter.

Also, vitamin D is an antioxidant that will protect the pufa in CLO, while

fish oil doesn't have a natural antioxidant to protect it.

fish oil doesn't have anything that CLO doesn't to my knowledge, so I don't

see the point of taking it unless you get lots of sunshine on your almost-naked

body between the hours of 10 and 2 in the summer and you are afraid of

vitamin D overdose. However, I find it incredibly hard to believe that anyone

who

does not overdose on D from CLO in the winter would overdose on D from CLO in

the summer, especially since most days of the week most folks don't have time

to sunbathe between 10 and 2, and even if you get out on your lunch break, you

usually don't strip down to a bikini for the hour.
