The word "heavy metal" to most people means a rock band. Heavy metals, however, are one of the most insidious health issues that our society is facing this century, mainly because these nasty toxic metals are just about everywhere on our planet, even in the North and South Poles! Heavy metal poisoning is so common these days that it is literally impossible to avoid it, as even young newborns have been shown to have heavy metals as soon as they emerge from their mother's womb, as well as receive other metals such as mercury as soon as they are born - from breastfeeding. A recent report published by Reuters from the Environmental Working Group showed that blood samples of umbilical blood taken by the American Red Cross from ten babies showed an average of 287 contaminants in the blood, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides and the Teflon chemical PFOA. Other similar research using neonates born in Greenland, has shown that even in this region of the world which we tend to think as being pristine clean, these babies had mercury, lead, and arsenic in their blood! If babies are not born with heavy metals they can obtain them immediately when they start to breast feed. For example, research has shown a positive correlation between the level of mercury in mother's breast milk and the number of dental amalgams in their mouth. The mean levels of mercury in milk of amalgam-free mothers was < 0.2 microgram/L, while milk from mothers with 1-4 amalgam fillings contained 0.57 microgram/L, with 5-7 fillings 0.50 microgram/L and with more than 7 fillings 2.11 micrograms/L. So, if you have amalgams in your mouth then it is more or less guaranteed that your little baby will recieve some of this mercury, either from the womb or during breast feeding. Many epidemiologists believe that this prenatal or postnatal exposure to toxic metals is probably responsible for over 50% of learning difficulties and cognitive disturbances in all U.S. children. Many studies are estimating that over 20% of the children in the U.S. have had their health or learning significantly adversely affected by toxic metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. Furthermore, toxic metals have been documented to be reproductive and developmental toxins, causing birth defects and damaging foetal development, as well as causing neurological effects, developmental delays, learning disabilities, depression, and behavioural abnormalities in many otherwise normal-appearing children. Such effects are also found in adults. Treating Heavy Metal Toxicity Conventionally, heavy metals were eliminated using a drug chelator such as DMSA, DMPS or EDTA. These are drugs that can latch onto metals and eliminate them from the body. One of the major disadvantages of using these drug chelators is that they do not differentiate between good and bad metals - they will flush out good metals too such as zinc, manganese, copper and more. They can also have quite a number of side effects, as well as overwhelming the detoxification organs such as the liver and the kidneys. It is better to use Natural chelating agents that can remove metals from the body without removing the good metals and without incurring any side effects. Be Knowledgable! It is important to know about heavy metals as these are insidious and omnipresent toxins that can cause a variety of health problems from headaches to cancer. The more you learn about these toxic metals, the more you can protect yourself and your loved ones.
