Hi Mandy and others

I saw Dr Tettenborn pediatrician today and he prescribed nyastin as

this is his first step in treating autism. I showed him my OAT test

results which shows high clostridia and he said they are misleading.

I asked him what to give for clostridia and he suggested Flagyll but

would not prescribe it until we have treated the yeast problem. He

said that I should either follow his guidance or go elsewhere.

I took the prescription and walked off.

This is what we have to put up here in this country where there is

only one doctor has some notion of the current treatment.

My question is are the natural antifungal better than nyastin.

Many thanks

Hi Rehana,

I did the nystatin/diet protocol (in our case we also did low

sugar/low yeast) with Dr T about six years ago. My son had some

very minor improvements when he started nystatin (no die-off),the

main one being improvemnt to allergic shiners up his nose!!! He was

also slightly calmer on it at first. I found that as i continued to

give it to my ds any improvemnts faded away. I have since learnt

through research and other parents views that nystatin is not

effective on all strains of yeast and the ones it does treat

eventually build up a resistance to it, which i think is what

happened in our case IMHO. Also you need to be aware that dr T will

probably have told you that N is a non-absorbable med so very safe

but he would not have taken in to account that alot of ASD kids have

leaky guts where stuff that shouldn't go throiugh does and can cause

probs, so long term use is possible not a good idea, again IMHO.

I'm not saying don't try it as it may work wonderfully for your

child just be aware of all the facets to this treatment route that

the doc may not tell you/may not understand himself!!! May i ask on

what basis he thought your child had yeast overgrowth or is he just

trying it to see?

These days (and probably then!) we have more probs with bacteria and

parasites so i am not a expert on natural anti-fungals, i understand

alot of people rotate them to be more effective, others may be able

to advise on this better than me, Mandi?

Re Flagyl we have used this on 2 occassions (not via Dr T) one to

treat parasites (found through testing) and the next time for

bacteria (also seen thro testing - high hippuric on oat). Both

times it has been dramatically effective giving us our happy child

back :+) It may be worth keeping quiet and persuing Dr T protocol

to eventually get him to perscribe it for you if this is the only

route available to you or get in to see Dr H (wonderful man and very

up to date in his knowledge but sadly you have to pay!)

Perhaps use (or don't use!)the Nystatin and tell Dr T its not

working (this will probably only work if your child is non-verbal

and does not have any/many physical signs)to see if you can get him

to move on to treat the bacteria ( very unprincipalled idea this but

needs must, i hope no one is too shocked by this idea of telling

porkies to a doc to get what you know your child needs :-O )

I hope some of this is of help to you, i must also confess that i do

have an axe to grind against Dt T. When i applied for funding from

the PCT for treatment at the Breakspear, they consulted

with him over whether they should agree or not and it came back

negative, so this man has cost us alot of money!!! I do plan to re-

apply, amassing evidence of the effectiveness at the mo, so would be

very interested if you manage to get Dr T to treat bacterial probs

of the gut.

There are no good studies that say what is best, and what is best for one might not be the best for another,

but perhaps

Saccharomyces boulardii could do a good hit.

this i think explains why peeps rotate anit-fungals :+)

we use s boulardii daily so this is probably why yeast is not a big

problem for us.

thanks Geir, Nikki
