Guest guest
Patty is right. Eating sodium chloride to replace sodium is just as bad as eating inorganic mineral supplements (from rock) to supply minerals. Celery and celery juice is very high in beneficial sodium. Some people like to dry celery and grind it up as a good salt substitute. hyperbaroman >From: " Patty " <faussettdp@...> >Reply-oxyplus ><oxyplus > >Subject: Re: SALT LICK? >Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 15:23:41 -0700 > >The sea salt will provide you with sodium, but it is in inorganic form. Guest guest
Evening Jeff, >Hello group. Need to pick your collective brain(s). Problem: I drink >a lot of water during the day. Now I've got it into my head that, >without adding back some salt/minerals, I may be messing with the >normal balance. When I first started drinking enough water ( 1 gallon PLUS per day ) two different nurses told me I better be careful, or I would wash all the sodium out of my body. I have never used a lot of salt. Typically do not add it to eggs or any food. Years ago, I found that often my sweat was not salty. After doing some research, I learned that not always do you sweat out salt. During these times, I would sweat so much it would blur my vision. Still.... not salty and no burn in when the salt got in the eyes. I am of the firm opinion, based of first person observations, the body is capable of doing its thing, without damage. After I had my September 2000 blood analysis, I found my sodium to be near the top of the range. When I saw these nurses again, I told them both...... " You have underestimated the ability of the human body to take care of itself " . After reading the water book, and increasing my water intake, I tried to increase the salt intake. I would keep bottles of sea salt in my pocket and have a lick a few times per day. Still..... I have never taken anywhere near the amount of 2500 mg per day. And I don't eat any salt laden foods. I don't claim to understand all this. But..... years after I observed the lack of salt in my sweat, I would be working in the heat. When the sweat is not salty, I know this would be a very good day. I would work in the heat and never feel exhausted. At times, when everything is working right, I think the body can conserve the minerals and sodium that is normally in sweat. As I got older, the exact opposite would be true. Early in the day, the first sweat would be very salty. No doubt the body has deteriorated and can no longer do the great wonder it did when I was younger. Maybe someone can explain the chemistry behind this. My last two blood analysis show a sodium or 147 or so. If anyone would like to look at these and buy insurance policies ........ both Sept 2001 and Mar 2001 plus Homocysteine and C-reactive protein results can be seen at.... www.fugitt.com/trailmix.htm The trailmix page has become a bit lengthy. I plan to add all foods that I like and eat regularly to this page. I plan to have another analysis in September of 2001. Not long off. I am trying to make some improvements so the analysis looks better. Any suggestions appreciated as to what I should do. ( after looking at the analysis ) Wayne

Guest guest
Evening Gail, .. Still..... I have never taken > > anywhere near the amount of 2500 mg per day. > > > > Hi Wayme, Can you tell me how much that would measure out in a spoon? >Say 1 tsp. = ? mg? Thanks, Gail My sea salt is very old. ( many years, the man who purchased it is now deceased ) It seems to compress and is lumpy. I have to break up the lumps from time to time. Hopefully it has not decomposed or changed in any way. Considering how old it was when it was first packaged, the 20 to 30 years means nothing. So..... volumetric measures will likely vary from 5 to 8 percent when weighed. 1/4 teaspoon = 18 grains = 1166 mg ( this is very close to ascorbic acid ) 1/2 teaspoon = 34.3 grains 2222.6 mg 1.0 teaspoon = 84.5 gains 5475.5 mg These are the results of my measurements. Of course one could simply use math and not even bother with the 1/2 and 1.0 unit. I wanted to see how uniform one could likely measure using volume. If my sea salt was more consistent, then the results would have been closer. For most practical purposes, the volume type measurement will be fine. Guest guest
There were recently two messages about salt: ******** Hi Jeff; This is the general guideline. Drink 1/2 your body weight of water in ounces, daily. Example: 180 lb = 90 oz. of water daily. Divide that into 8 or 10 oz. glasses and that's how many glasses you will need to drink, daily. I personally would try to get the sodium in organic form, and celery is one vegetable high in organic sodium. Be careful of taking too much salt-- Patty ******** Here are my comments: One quarter of a teaspoon per quart of water is probably too little. However, the amount required by people is different. Second, sea salt IS " organic. " It readily dissolves in water and becomes an electrolyte, capable of generating the much needed electrical charge in the body. I'm aware of the school of thought that one should get one's minerals from fruits and veggies. However, not everyone can. Celtic Sea Salt, available from the Grain and Salt Society (1-800-TOPSALT), is a good choice. Regards, Nina Silver, Ph.D.

What is the > most you can take? > Thanks, Gail This is such an individual matter, as is diet, beneficial climate, etc. etc. Personally I eat between 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt a day, depending on what else I eat and how hot it is. Dr. Batmanghelidj, author of **The Body's Many Cries for Water**. suggests salt with every glass so as not to deplete the body of needed minerals. Don't forget that water can flush out minerals from the system. Unfortunately, one's thirst mechanism is not always a reliable indicator of how much water one needs. One might simply stop feeling thirsty when the thirst mechanism breaks down after a point of gross dehydration. Alternatively, one may be continually thirsty because the water is not being assimilated properly, rather than there not being enough of the actual fluid in the system. However, you can use your thirst as a guide. Regards, Nina Silver, Ph.D. dedicated to global healing through social change in many forms... Guest guest
Dear Nina, It is very important that the whole spectrum of trace minerals be replaced with each glass of water, not just salt. My sister is manic depressive (bipolar) and took lithium for 25 years. This produced a continual thirst and she drank several gallons of water, plus juices, daily, for all that time. It severely depleted the mineral stores in her body and led to crumbling teeth, sagging spine, pot belly and other problems. She has been using Concentrace trace minerals for some time, and it has slowly built her back up somewhat. She has switched off lithium now and is doing better, with much reduced thirst. She drinks only about a gallon of water a day now. Best of Health! Guest guest
Dear Saul, Maybe you would be kind enough to elaborate on the trace mineral information. As I understand it (which isn't much!!), the Concentrace minerals are ionic which, according to some research, means that they're only about 30% absorbable and that they are not in the same form as if you get them from plants but are still in the raw form that the plants use taking them from the soil. The minerals that I've used before are Dr Wallach's colloidal minerals which are, supposedly, from ancient plant life mined in some valley in the US (can't recall the name). And these, are supposedly in the form required by humans as they're directly from plants and therefore about 95% absorbable. What is the truth here ? Do you know much detail about this whole trace mineral subject as it seems that there are so many products and misinformation that it's difficult to know the good from the bad. At the moment, all I'm doing for my minerals is simmering a few handfuls of various seaweeds for about 20-30mins (Wakame, Dulse, Hijiki, etc), straining the dark liquid and drinking a little daily with water. I'm assuming this is good as seaweed is one of the richest mineral sources. Any thoughts ? Best wishes Re: SALT LICK? Guest guest
Dear , " Colloids are aggregates of atoms or molecules in a finely divided state, dispersed in a liquid medium, resisting sedimentation, diffusion, and filtration. " (Stedman's Concise Medical Dictionary) " Ions are an atom or group of atoms carrying a charge of electricity by virtue of having gained or lost one or more valence electrons, usually constituting one of the parts of an electrolyte. " (ibid) " An Electrolyte is any compound that, in solution, contains ions and conducts a current of electricity and is decomposed by it; an ionizable substance in solution " . (ibid) Concentrace is a colloidal, ionic electrolyte. The company that produces it says that it has been injected intravenously in severe cases of dehydration. That would seem to go a long way toward answering the question of safety and efficacy. Fossilized plants have their organic parts replaced by inorganic minerals. That is what fossilization is. Is that what is meant by 'ancient plant life'? Caveat emptor. I think it is a good process you are going through with the sea vegetables, but you should be aware that you will be concentrating all the metals/minerals that they have in them, which may include mercury. Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 23:22:08 +0100 Dear Saul, Maybe you would be kind enough to elaborate on the trace mineral information. Dr. Saul --------------------------------------------------------- You wrote: <snip> Dr. Batmanghelidj, author of **The Body's Many Cries for Water**. suggests salt with every glass so as not to deplete the body of needed minerals. Don't forget that water can flush out minerals from the system. Guest guest
Hi Nina, Sorry, I just believe that food should be your medicine. Why take supplements to give you something that can be provided in a better form from real food? The only reason would be a deficient diet.
