Hi and Happy New Year! I was wondering if any of you have ever gotten your child involved in Special Olympics as an athlete and what your experience has been. Thanks for your feedback. __________________________________________________

We havent used Special Olympics as a resource yet but we will in a few years I am sure. (14) is still at the level where he can play on the community teams but that will change as the kids age..........and become more competitive. I imagine Special Olympics is like alot of organizations where the local leaders and coaches set the tone for the group....good leaders/ good group...worth a try.

May you have warm words on a cold evening,a full moon on a dark night, and a smooth road all the way to your door.

go to www.specialolympics.org . florida has it

spelled out in english in a user-friendly way at

www.sofl.org if you prefer to read there first. a

child must be 8 years of age to participate. we do it

through the school system here in florida. some

places do it thru their recreation depts. when you

visit the national website, you can look for your

local program by state, and then by area. they will

give you a list of contacts there. thanks

My son has been in Special Olympics for almost 10years. He was able

to participate because he had Adaptive PE thru the school. If this

is not the case with your child, just contact your local Special

Recreation Association & they should be able to help you. They also

have many different activities that your child could/should

participate in. It's great for the social skills development. SO is

NOT just for the " mentally retarded " as some of the literature

states - it's for the developmentally delayed people as well.

With my son's participation in SO, our family has also become very

involved with different aspects. My daughter & I are both coaches &

volunteers and I have worked in our local SpecRec office helping the

staff prepare for the different area meets. It's really exciting to

see it from all the different perspectives: as a parent; as a

volunteer/coach; & then from the administrative side. You'd never

realize all that it takes to put on the Area Track & Field meet,

which is usually the biggest event of the year (at least in our area

in IL).

I sincerely encourage you and all the others members in this group to

look into their child's participation. They meet so many people their

own age and their self esteem gets a boost when they are awarded

their medals/ribbons at the end of the day! I'm so treasured to have

met the people that I have & to see the joy on all the participant's

faces when they are assembled for each competition.

Good luck!

mother to Kenny, 20yo, AS, EBD, BP & , 21yo, in college studying

SpecEd with an emphasis on autism ;-)
