I am also in the field of Special Education and have been so since 1972. At that time, I worked in an intensive training program for Mentally Retarded, Multihandicapped children. These were the kids who were "kicked out" of County classes, because quite frankly, they were allowed to do that. In 1972 I worked with 2 children with full Dx autism, and maybe 3 others who would now be considered to be "on the spectrum". Back then, children received a very limited number of vaccines, and there were fewer food additives. Our lakes and oceans weren't toxic to the point that the fish we ate caused methylmercury to build up in our bodies. Now, an average high school senior has received a total of 94 vaccines! MSG, aspartimine, artificial colorings...I could go on...are present in close to everything in the supermarket shelves. Educate yourself, and you'll see that this is true! Most non-organic chicken contains higher amounts of arsnic than the U.S government allows in water. What about antimony in matresses and pajamas added as a flame retardant? Lead is in everything including little imported toys and jewelry. I just tested my older porcelain bathtub and found it to be leaching lead. If you don't think that some kids succumb to such a toxic overload, thus regressing into a world of so called "isms, then you had better read before you write. Again, I could go on, but why should you care? Your family has apparently been one of the few who has been able to dodge that pesty little "ism". Probably because you have such good parenting skills. Well, Ms. Grant, according to the real statistics, the cards are stacked against you for never having a family member or friend who will remain unaffected by this monsterous thing called "autism". Although I am so angry to think that you would speak out so vehemently against those who have children on the spectrum, I would not wish this on anybody. No child, or his or her family, deserves to be burdened with the problems, expenses and heartbreak that accompanies autism. Nor could I ever imaginea mother deliberately chosing to label her child as autistic, just to collect a few extra dollars from the government! Think about the harm you have just done to millions of families who struggle with this "ism" on a daily basis, and think about it when your taxes will eventually go to caring for theses individuals when their aging parents no longer can. You have pushed the work of autism advocates back a step or two by publishing this disgusting piece of unresearched trash. But you have also fuled the fire in us to push forward with our fight to eradicate this hidious beast from the face of the earth. Do you owe the public an apology? You bet you do. But we won't hold our breath, because, quite frankly, you don't care. We do, and as parents and advocates of affected children, we will continue to search for asnwers. We will do what we have to do to protect YOUR children, grandchildren, neices, and nephews from ever developing this devastating illness that attacks the immune system, gut and brain. And you know what else? Because of people who truly care, many of our kids are getting better! Gee... could THAT come from bad parenting???
