good idea!! See thinking!! Do you ever wake-up in the middle of the night and

start thinking of IEP's or stuff? I can never get back to sleep when that

happens.

>Are you using regular plastic panties or any of her favorite

character's design panties ? There is so much out there

If I could find Barney underwear in size 4 or 5 Rochelle would love it. But I

only saw smaller sizes. If anyone sees them out there in cyberland let me

know. The plastic panti's go over the regular undies. I think she may get hot

since they don't breathe very well.

It's wierd but Rochelle seems to be wetting herself more frequently. It's

like she holds some back for later. Go figure. Maybe this is her way of

getting some attention. Boy does she get attention.

Diane , I hear ya , yes . Last year 2001 , was definitley like that .

Especially when I found the site of the Disability Solution

Newsletter on what Joan had written about the DS/ASD. I just could

not stay away in researching . Ever since then , my mind has been on

the go . Then when I ran across this list of VIP parents . Whew ! I

could not believe the similar stories .

Hope you find something , great idea on what Karyn suggested . I know

I saw something on transferring from fabric to whatever item at the

craft stores . Let us know when you run across something . I'll also

keep my eyes open . ;)

Yep, same here with . He can retain his urine for a long time

and when he is ready , watch out ! is coming along with the

trial of his new boxer briefs . He will have nothing to do with pull-

ups , which I would like for him to wear at nights , but he wins .

Thats ok , but thought I would keep trying . Toilet training is still

good at school these past 2 days , he returns home with the same

school uniform pants . Hang in there . Take care .

I think it is good doesn't want to wear pull-ups but I do understand

about accidents. Can you stop giving him any liquids after a certain time.

Maybe this will help him stay dry all night. Can he physically hold out all

night? Some boys even typical take a long time in this area.

Rochelle went potty before dinner last night and then went to open the

bathroom door. I think this is a start of her understanding. I usually dump

the little pot in the toilet after she goes. She was very proud of herself.

Me too, I'm glad that he understands no more pull-ups. I'll continue

to clean up and wash , wash away .

> Can you stop giving him any liquids after a certain time.

At school he is cooperating nicely after the return of his holiday

break . Maybe he just wants to use that toilet at school . He has

been arriving pretty tired and will follow his schedule and cooperate

with the toilet routine but just won't do anything . He's been pretty

quiet and sometimes not too hungry but very thirsty . Then when its

bedtime he'll fight his sleep and rock away & stim his dangling

elephant probably fighting having to urinate . I told him toilet and

not the bed , do not wet the bed . He will ask me for " water " meaning

a drink because he hates drinking water . Then I'll say " you want a

drink ? " " Lets go to toilet and then drink " , will cooperate, but

still no luck . He has stayed dried for the past 2 nights and waits

until he is at school . Teacher says alot as soon as he arrives .

Because I've been letting her know about it .

> Maybe this will help him stay dry all night. Can he physically hold

out all night?

Yep ! Yep ! He'll stay dry as soon as he arrives from school until

the following day at school , so I will give him plenty of liquids ,

then will cut it off at least 2 hrs. before bedtime .

Yeah ! Diane ,

Yes , she is getting the concept of it . You see , you are doing

great with her . Keep up the good work ! is just being

right now , but he'll come around again . I guess he's paying me back

for not wearing those other white underwear , hmm .

If I know a IEP is coming, or if I just had an IEP I

think about it all the time.

lol , me not thinking clearly as I wrote this and probably will

confuse you some more with some further news. Ok ,ok let me see he

was only having many wet accidents during the night , the past 2 days

he has not had any accidents and have stayed dried , but not

urinating at all . He would actually hold his # 1 or # 2 until he got

to school . At school , he has been Mr. perfecto , going and

cooperating nicely . BUT !! Not today , a shocker !! He got up and

headed straight to the restroom and stood in front of the toilet and

peed away with his clothing on , I guess he did not time it well ,

but his dad caught him to finish off in the toilet . I told my

husband , I don't care if he had an accident , at least he went on

his own and sort of got the idea of what to do . I'm so proud of

him , I wanted to reward him with his favorite dessert , ice cream

with choc. syrup , he had fallen asleep . Now that was another

shocker , finally asleep early . Anyways not to bore you anymore ,

until later my potty training partner , lol . Shall we celebrate if

we ever graduate with this issue ? ;)

This is great news!! Your reminds me of my older son who has a strong

bladder too!!! He will hold it forever. Never would go at school. He would

sometimes wait so long that he didn't have time to pull down his pants. At

least, is going at school. It must be the structure. Sounds like he is

definetly getting it. I will be happy to have daytime dryness. If she can

ever communicate it to me that would be a double bonus.

Yes, I am so happy today too!!!! These successes help me to feel good about

Rochelle. :) It has been a long time coming. I have tried many times for one

week at a time over the past year and a half and it never worked out. But,

this time is different. Celebrate yes!! Put your thinking cap on and think of

how we would could celebrate.

Actually, I have a food journal for them to write in what she eats. They've

been pretty good about remembering. So, now I write in when she goes potty

too. Same as you. Time and wet/dry. They write potty time too. But, today the

teacher told me Rochelle needs more structure and showed me a weekly schedule

that she will send home to me in addition to communication notebook.

Ever since the eligibilty meeting teacher has started to address Rochelle's

needs as if she has autism. We are still waiting another meeting to nail this

down. So, I guess going for the autism label has already made a difference in

how they communicate with Rochelle. I should add that I like this teacher

alot. She is very dedicated to the children. Although she says she never has

enough support. Someone is always out sick or leaving for a new job etc...

I talk to the teacher everyday because I drive Rochelle. My choice to drive.

I like communicating face to face. It has worked out better for my nerves.

Plus, Rochelle hates the bus. She did it for 2 yrs and never liked it. I do

feel a bit like a taxi. I drive my son to a different school because it is

not our base school.

I hope and Rochelle both succeed this year! This will be our year

Irma!!

Diane :)

Ok , reading this sounds LOOKING GOOD ! I'll continue to cross my

fingers that he may continue going and hopefully the correct way .

> At least, is going at school. It must be the structure.

Structure is the key here and of course not at home , getting

somewhat there ,now that In Home Training is involved . I've

mentioned this in the past during 's elementary days that I

needed someone to help me at home but no luck . Middle school has

been great and especially now that the second label has been added .

Biddy biddy bang bang , all in one shot now I'm receiving information

and invited to many workshops , parent-training meetings ,support

groups , & other services provided . Even though I'm attending the

local support group , I like the school district to provide the

services. As the confirmation of the label was going on . Kathy has

been a great supportive friend that has been helping us through

this , it has helped so much that I don't feel like a dummy when

dealing about what is needed . I like being prepared , do you know

what I mean ?

>Sounds like he is definetly getting it. I will be happy to have

Does your teacher send you daily notes? Because I had 's

teacher revise her daily note form that she had created herself to

cut down on the composition book writing type of parent/teacher

communication . Took up too much time and time is costly as the class

are always on the go . Plus the concentration & time is needed on the

areas to be worked on . Anyways here is an example of what had been

added to 's daily note .

Toilet A.M.-tried/went Toilet P.M.-tried/went .

This has helped trememdously to keep track of .

Tissue time and fingers crossed , I hear ya on the looooooong time

coming , remember we tried for ages , too . We are not alone and our

kids shall succeed as long as we continue to educate , support

ourselves . What a journey . Ok , you put your thinking cap on and

I'll try across the miles , until we cross this bridge . Take care .

Hey guys,

Coming in late on this discussion. (Been very busy) This is so true

Diane. My 16 yo son still has a problem. His doc said that it was

hormonal and that he will not be in the clear from bed-wetting until he has

completed puberty. We have a prescription for a nasal spray that he uses

on sleepovers to keep him from wetting (can't use it nightly---it's very

safe, made from natural hormones, much like synthroid----but if you use it

too much, you can build up an immunity to it) Now, it only happens maybe

once every month). One of the things I've learned with this whole

bedwetting thing is that number one, it is hereditary (both my one brother

and Duff's 4 brothers had the problem) and number two, reducing fluids after

6 really does not do much to inhibit urine production through the night.

It's caffeine that is the culprit. I always tell n NOT to drink soda

after 6 when he is out......(we don't buy it at home) or iced tea. As

far as pull ups? My personal opinion is that it sends a message to kids

that it's ok to go at night (psychologically). It's certainly easier in

terms of sheet and blanket changing, but my three other kids never used a

pull up at night (first of all, with the first two, there was no such

thing----I used REAL diapers back then) Now, granted, for Maddie, we will

be using pull ups. I recognize that our kids are very different. I am

just saying that for my 4 other kids, the pull ups were not the best option

at night.

Good news Irma, on 's progress. And on Rochelle too Diane!!!! It

sure is thrilling and let's hope you guys can pass out advice to ME and

others when it looks like Maddie is getting close!!!!

I have to jump in and say caffeine and wine are natural diruetics. I was

waking up a couple times a night to go potty for awhile till I told the

doctor. I cut back on my 4 cups of coffee in the morning and my glass of wine

at night. Boy, what a difference. I savor my 2 cups of coffee in the morning.

After having kids I don't think I will ever be the same. It could be age

too. Hope not! lolol5tgr

then girls.

babysitt- well his mom said he was potty trained but

Very interesting Donna , I guess I have some questions to ask my dh .

I hate to stop giving a drink right before bed because I worry

that he may get dehydrated , if he request for a drink as he is in

bed , I'll grab a tiny Dixie cup with water . Because then he will

not cooperate . No sodas at this end .

> My personal opinion is that it sends a message to kids that it's ok

You are certainly right on this and glad does not want to wear

one anymore . I'll wash the extra loads .

>----I used REAL diapers back then)

Can you imagine using the real diapers on our kids ? We surely would

be a pin cushion .

> Now, granted, for Maddie, we will be using pull ups.

Can't wait to read when you start writing about cutie pie Maddie when

she is ready for the toilet training.

Thanks , what a journey . Not totally jumping for joy , yet but we

have come a long way .

I'm glad we can discuss almost anything here on this list because we

are not alone and our kids are challengers . Some conversations we

get excited over, like this potty subject . We can all relate . Here

is wishing Maddie to do good with her toilet training when she

crosses this bridge . Take care.

Thanks a ,

Glad you think so , because you know there will be those times where

he will not budge . Many hugs to too , on his " go talk " .

This I would like to try on as now he is cooperating in many

areas and ready to be taught. Now that his agressive behavior has cut

  • 2 years later...

You may want to try a marble jar or something along those lines that

will spark his interest. My son had/has problems and is over 5

now. Its tough when normal incentives won't work for *our* kids. I

also would start each day new and fresh. If he pooped in his pants,

no more computer for the rest of the day. Since that is his

favorite thing, it was the first choice to take away.

Honestly, be really careful though. My son didn't care what I took

away, he just pooped but then it turned into a physical problem

where he would hold it and then hard poop and then major diarrea ...

we put him on a prescription laxative to make him go every 24 hours

no matter what ... he wore pullups during this three month period

because his bowels were loose and it was easier for cleanup if he

didn't quite make it. I found the Mylax helped him get regular and

he's been doing pretty good for the past few months being off the

meds. He still refuses to *push* poop out .. something about the

sensation that bothers him so he sometimes waits too long. Its been

a very long process at our house ... I think its definitely related

to the ASD ...

I highly recommend the prescription if he's not pooping on a regular

basis daily ...

Kathy

p.s. good luck!

My 11 yr old son goes in his pants whenever there is a transition that

he can't handle. My son with pdd-nos 7 yrs old also has problems

going in the toilet. I would like some advice about what I can do to

help them solve this issue. They can clean themselves up, but I still

have to do laundry. It is kind of disgusting and my oldest does it

for several days after the transition.

any suggestions,
