Most likely low K in your body and heart. In general I decrease spiro when it is hot because you lose more Na in sweat. I wake up most mornings, and sometimes at night out of a dead sleep, with my pulse racing so fast it's as if a motor is running inside me. A couple of times I thought we were having an earthquake but then realized the shaking I felt was coming internally. Often, when I turn over onto my left side, I'll get the rapid pulse and heartbeat when I'm asleep (half-asleep, whatever). I'm on 50 mg of spiro daily, which I have to incresse to 100 in hot weather. I am also perimenopausal, and I know that a lot of women on the menopause forums (who do not have PA) talk about having this racing pulse/palpitation/internal shaking thing going on at night. Does Dr Grim or anyone have any thoughts on this -- is this a symptom of PA, a side effect of spiro, a sign of inadequate or too much spiro? Or is this simply a perimenopausal thing related to hormones (estrogen, which I know is invoved in a delicate balnce with adrenalin)?? I have asked the GYN before, but she looked at me like I was from another planet. (And I refuse to believe that a GYN has never encountered another perimenopausal woman asking about it. It's all over the menopause forums.)Anyway, thoughts? Em

My K, when last measured (Dec 09) was 4.3. Has been running between 4.3 and 4.5

for the past 18 mos. when measured in blood tests. Lab normal is 3.5-5.0.

What do you mean by saying that it's most likely " low K in body and heart " , if

my labs indicate the K is fine?

I am having surgery next month with general anesthesia and am concerned about

effects of this and my PA -- now I'm really nervous.

I read the guidelines when I first began looking at this site. I never clench.

One other thing, in my last labs (Dec 09) my blood sugar was low. Never has been

low before, always fine. My endo said not to worry about it. I am perimenopausal

with a vengeance. Wondering if the low sugar could be thyroid/estrogen related,

and that in turn might be causing the nightime pulse racing. Need to ask GYN.

Have any other women on here had this around time of perimeno?

The first thing I would do is get a good 12 fasting repeat with a HbA1c.Your Endo was right. I also have periods of racing heart at night. Actually it was much worse when

symptoms started two years ago, now it does not usually beat as fast but

sometimes feels like it is contracting very hard. And I feel it almost always

when I'm laying on my left side; almost never on my right, or much less anyway.

I feel it pounding harder when I've eaten out (probably high NA intake) or when

my BP is higher as it is getting now since I had to stop ACE for repeat

aldo/renin. Yesterday BP was up to 130/94 and now I am getting dizzy if I try

to exercise, get headaches, and generally feel more fatigued. In fact last

night I could tell BP was higher because I almost did not sleep at all due to

pounding sensation with my heartbeat; not racing, but a bit faster than normal;

mainly a feeling of heart working hard and it keeps me awake.
