Hi Tetty,

Would you be able to post a little more info on the other treatments already in place. We had a very sleepless little boy until we withdrew gluten and cassein. Within weeks he was sleeping through the night.

Sleep problems - need help

Dear all,I have just returned from visiting a DAN doctor in US.I told him that one of my problem is getting an early sleep for my DD and sleeping through the night.My DD sleeps at 10 pm and will wake up at around 2 am, asking for milk then back to sleep again after 1 hour.He prescribed the following and all to be given at the same time,- melatonin 1 mg- 5HTP 50 mg- LD naltrexone 1 mg (TD cream)This whole is a new stuff for me and then I came across some information in Sidney Baker's book that made me doutbful. It said that longer term effect on melatonin is not known. As it is a hormone, I am quite worried. 5HTP is safer but I read the label that it shouldn't be given with other sleeping aids. Does this mean that I should not give at the same time with melatonin ?On top of that, I didn't find LDN as sleeping aids, instead it is for immune system.Now I am confused..Has anyone had an experience in using those stuff ?Appreciate for your information or any advice, as my DD's sleep is now worsen. For us casein/dairy and gluten withdrawal were also big for improving

sleep.

Re melatonin, lots of people report that it works well, but usually only

for a while.

LDN helps with all sorts of things (no one really knows why, lots of

pieces missing yet, but when it works it is GREAT for all sorts of

things, sleep improvements being one of them. In you place I would try

that one first (after introducing the diet!) and then try m and 5htp if

those two things don't do the trick.

Hi Natasa. She is already in GF/CF diet for about 9 months now.

When she was under 1.5 years, she used to have night awakening due

to colic. I changed her milk to soy and the problem went away.

Now I am just thinking whether it is from soy as she is taking soy

formula milk (my DD is 2.5 yo).

Hello Jane,

She is in GF/CF diet for about 9 months now. I didn't see it helps

her sleep.

Is your son in soy free diet or not ?

I am just thinking whether soy can be an issue as well.

Theory is if you give Melatonin at any other time than at night, you would disrupt the circadian rhythm. We have not noticed this fact.

Melatonin will not work if you are not low in it. We gave this and noticed a big improvement in cognitive functioning early on. We did not give it for sleep, we had no problems there, but it did make her sleeply.

We used a very little bit (.75mg) when she took her nap and 1.5 mgs at night before she went to bed. Melatonin is a great brain antioxidant and is said to be great for the immune system. For some kids, I suspect the ones who have a harder time getting enough oxygen to their brain, there is a great boost.

Tetty,

Aside from the fact that many of our kids have problems with soy,

there may be problems inherent to soy for the entire population.

Getting rid of the formula, particularly now that she's 2.5, might be

a wise decision.

The Weston A Price foundation has come out strongly against soy (at

least at the enormous levels many people now consume it) and with good

reason, IMO.

Hi Tetty,

For us removing gluten and cassein alone (and we did make mistakes at first ) made a big difference in the sleep department. was a child who slept for a few hours before midnight and then woke, wide eyed, giggled, made stupid noises, bounced on the bed, invaded our bed and carried on like this for a few hours everynight until he finally fell asleep around four oclock in the morning - we were totally exhausted and this caused us a huge amount of stress. This behaviour went on for years. The diet solved this within weeks. We only ever have a problem when gets gluten or cassein. In fact, now that we are using digestive enzymes I don't think the odd infraction causes us much if any problems. We are soy and now sugar free but we had already solved the sleep problems when we took these out.

For us removing gluten and cassein alone (and we did make mistakes at first ) made a big difference in the sleep department. was a child who slept for a few hours before midnight and then woke, wide eyed, giggled, made stupid noises, bounced on the bed, invaded our bed and carried on like this for a few hours everynight until he finally fell asleep around four oclock in the morning - we were totally exhausted and this caused us a huge amount of stress. This behaviour went on for years. The diet solved this within weeks. We only ever have a problem when gets gluten or cassein. In fact, now that we are using digestive enzymes I don't think the odd infraction causes us much if any problems. We are soy and now sugar free but we had already solved the sleep problems when we took these out.

Any of 's supps I have tried always gave me migraine, they definitely did a good job on things I was trying to tackle, but I would rather look old and feel arthritic than have daily migraines [sigh]

As a by the by

I saw a neurologist last weekend who was talking about current research into

sleep and it's effects.

It was part of two hour conversation so I kind of made a mental note rather

than took any huge detailed interest. Basically he re-iterated the points

you are making about the need for deep, quality sleep to help general

regeneration but also concentration and mood.

He has a hypothesis that the improvement/recovery rate for Autisitc children

is highest where in addition to intervention, deep sleep is achieved.

He's currently carrying out a trial with his autistic patients in Italy with

a view to identifying whether there appears to be any benfit amongst them.

It's relatively informal, with about 20 or so people involved, but he said

he'd keep me posted.

Tetty,

We've used the melatonin for several years. It was on of our fisrt

successful interventions to help with sleep. She was one of those

kids that was instantly awake even when we would just peek in to

check on her. With melatonin we could actually hear a few snores now

and then. Our daughter has taken both the regular and timed release

form. I, too, was concerned about the hormone affect but when

balanced against good sleep and the purported antioxidant effect of

the melatonin, the I opted to try it.

We've tried 5HTP a couple of times. She does well on tryptophan

which we have used periodically over the years but just goes balistic

on the 5HTP. She participated in the low dose naltrexone study and

has been on 4mg of the topical. We are planning to keep her on it for

awhile. Contrary to what some have experienced, she was constantly

hungry for the first several weeks on ldn. At first her weight went

up a few pounds, then tapered out over the course of the next several

weeks. She has only run a true 'fever'[low grade at 99[f]axillary

once in her life-during one of the first rounds of chelation].

During the 16 weeks of ldn, she's had 4 episodes of low fever. I'm

hopeful that her immune system may be modulating.

Hi Jane I am new to the site and would like to understand about degestive enzymes and about bathing my son in epsom salt as I did bath him in it last night and he slept extermely well but I am just looking on internet and dont really have time to go through well or may be I just need to chat to some one .
