Stacey, I live in Dallas, Tx. and I am the grandmother of Karac, a 14 year old autistic boy. I have Karac every day and I am paid for the hours that I care for him. I have been told that if I took gaurdianship of him I would be paid in-home services. I don't know how much that would be. As long as his mother is living that would not be an option for me.

I think you will like Austin; I have a daughter who lives in California and she says it is a lot cheaper to live in Texas than to live in California. Blessings, Pat K

Hi Stacey~

We just had someone post to my local support group about the services here in TX. I dont know how services are in CA, but I can guarantee, they're much better than TX. I'll forward the file to you.

Anyone from Texas here?

Hello all,I'm putting out some feelers for those that are in Texas.I am considering moving to Austin,TX not sure though but need to research resources that are there such as SSI/Medi-cal (which I guess would be medicare in TX).I am a single parent and I am at home with my son.If we were to move to TX I need to make sure we can still receive the same services we do here in CA in order to make it financially.I called the 800# to Soc Security and they told me that I would not need to re-apply for anything ,just provide new address and my case would be transfered to a local office in that area.He also said that the amount of SSI may be lower because CA pays more than any other state but as to how much he could not say.As for medicare he said that, that would also transfer over as well and should not be any delay,or lapse of coverage.Like many things there are always the unexpected details that are left

out so that's why I am coming to you all who may be in the same situation or have some knowledge on these things. Here in CA we also have what's called In-home services. This basically pays the parent to care for their child and to keep their care at home .So,any feedback would be appreciated.Stacey

Hey Pat,

Wow,I didn't know you were from Dallas!!I have family there as

well(grandmother, aunts, cousins). So do you get paid from respite? My mom does

here in CA.I do the in-home but here in Cali a family member can be the provider

for either instead of someone from outside. So does Karac's mom get in-home? That

is what I'm really needing info on . Yeah texas is definately cheaper than CA,no

doubt. The average prices for homes here are about 5-600k.

I could get paid for respite and I do sometimes, but we have other sources for respite. Karac goes to Camp Summit three times a year and that is paid for as respite. I don't know what my job is called. I have Karac every day and I am paid for all the hours that I work with him. Everything that Karac had learned I have been responsible for teaching him. I had an ABA program with him for three years before he started to school. , my daughter-in-law get a house keeper paid for, music therapy for Karac, and Equest paid by what is called, "class". She is very happy with all of that. Oh, when goes to Colorado to visit her parents, and I keep Karac, I get paid for respite. I am thrilled. I can't believe I get paid for taking care of my own grandson.

Hi,

didn’t know there were so many Texans on the list. I’m from West Texas, out near Lubbock but have family in NE Fort Worth.

We

have three groups that folks can choose from.

SPAN – South Plains

Autism Network is an informational/educational group for the parents. They provide child care during the monthly

meetings.

Spectrum Coalition is

a social group for the person with ASD.

They also meet once a month in various recreational settings around

town.

The Burkhart Project

has a monthly support group for parents.

It’s a more informal group where families just visit with each

other.

Our ESC also hosts a

bi-annual autism conference.

After rereading my email I think I should have checked it for errors before I
