Guest guest
Just another way to get the focus off the real cause................vaccines. (and to put the blame on parents) Kathy Autism and TV http://www.slate.com/id/2151538 this is a link for an article speculating that TV may cause autism. Its a good read. Any thoughts on this? I know my mom used to let my son watch tons of TV on the days she watched him because she had lots of work to do.

Guest guest
I am sure that at sometime in the future we will find that the doctors or scientists who conducted this phoney baloney research got their white lab coat pockets stuffed with plenty of money by the pharmaceutical companies who poisoned our children with heavy metal tainted vaccines. Guest guest
I seriously doubt that educational DVD's are going to harm any child. If anything, they are giving the young child an education. Now, if you were to say he was watching Bugs Bunny and Road Runner that would be a different story. Guest guest
Awwww...watching Baby Einstein didn't cause your son's problems. Don't even think that for a minute. There are a million and one theories people have come up with, but the bottom line is that nobody REALLY knows. And besides, how many people do you know whose kids watch TV all the time and don't have problems. Kids either have a predisposition for these things or they don't. And you can't possibly know ahead of time. People love to blame the mothers for everything wrong with children. Even though a lot of stuff might really be our " fault " , what other job has millions of complex responsibilities coupled with extreme criticism for every minor mistake? Motherhood is hard hard hard, and even more so for those of us with special needs children. Don't blame yourself, praise yourself. Your son is safe and loved and protected, you are doing the best you can. (I think I was writing this to myself as well...hahaha) > > I have had some concerns about the Baby Einstein serious of movies. Guest guest
Hi , we use those baby einstein shows too. I feel guilty but the research on TV is so new, who would have known that it could possibly be harmful to babies. After reading research it makes sense since babies do learn from touching and doing. Explains why I have such ADD! My mom always had the TV on. But, I don't think that is the cause, my son was like this from day 1. The TV probably didn't help though. > > I have had some concerns about the Baby Einstein serious of movies. Guest guest
I feel differently about the TV. Karac learned all the alphabet; his numbers to 20; names of animals, and many songs by the age of 2 from watching Barney and Sesame Street. He collected all the Sesame Street characters and knew their names. He is 14 now and sometimes still enjoys a Sesame Street program. On the other hand, the research has shown that too much TV is not good for any child. A recent study showed a correlation between hours of watching TV and low school grades. I still think that the MMR shot is the major contributor to autism. Love and blessings, Pat K

Guest guest
Neither of my ASD kids watched Baby Einstein. I think this research is interesting, but a bunch of bunk! There are many, many NT kids who watched a whole lot of TV and are fine. Just because two things happen at the same time does not mean that one causes the other, or are even related. That's why we need scientific research!! You could say that just because the vaccine schedule exploded at the same time as the autism rate does not mean they are related - and that could be true. We just don't know. Global warming has been happening at the same time - could it be from that? Who knows, but hopefully some of these new scientific studies will shed some light. Now, if we can just keep them independent. MarieTami Schaff <tamischaff11@...> wrote: Hi , we use those baby einstein shows too. Guest guest
I think this is a bunch of CRAP to deter the real problems of vaccinations etc., How does TV watching account for all the gut problems kids with autism have, how does it account for all the allergies, and IGG, IGA irregularities, how does it account for the kids having various and sundry rashes, viral markers that are off the charts, measles titersthat are sometimes 100% more than the norm, This is the stupidest deflection I have seen yet trying to bring the focus away from thereal culprits vaccines and environmental pollution.Tami Schaff <tamischaff11@...> wrote: Hi , we use those baby einstein shows too. Guest guest
I agree with you; there are times the TV should be off. I understand what you mean about wishing you had turned the TV off and talked to your grandmother. Sometimes I think, "Oh I wish I had talked to my mother about certain things before she died." That's just so normal. Love and blessings, Pat K
Guest guest
I'm with you, I don't think its the cause. But, I do think it can have an impact. I remember trying to sleep at night and my mom had that darn TV on so loud, I couldn't sleep. And, she always had it going in the background during the day. It just seems to me, our brains need a break from all that noise so we can concentrate on our environment. Babies brains are blank until filled with sensory input, TVs could disrupt that a little???? I do have my shows I watch and I do let the kids watch their shows, but we have the thing turned off most of the time. > > > > I have had some concerns about the Baby Einstein serious of > movies. Guest guest
When all is said and done, we are likely to find no smoking gun that causes ASD. It seems genetics plays an important role in children being more susceptible to ASD -- then tack on enablers, such as vaccinations, TV, environment, diet, etc. I remember on the Baby Einstein videos, (the founder) refers to the videos helping to make neurological connections in the brain of infants. What if a child with neurological development issues are subjected to these videos. Could it possibly have a reverse effect? Just thinking out loud here. Guest guest
So cute about the Sesame Street characters. My youngest son, Luke is really into Elmo now. He smiles so big when he sees him. That is a good point Pat. My kids too learned alphabet etc...from the educational shows. I think scheduled tv watching for educational purposes is a good thing if its limited. One thing I learned in my teacher education classes is that most kids do not learn from printed text and lecture alone. Visuals are powerful teaching tools that most kids respond well too. Keeps them focused, engaged and they like it. So learning becomes easier. Visuals work magic for my autistic son. But, I know some people that have their TV running in the background all day and I know my mom did. For the same reason I think tv is good (grabs attention) its also a negative. I know when we have the tv on, we don't interact as a family at all. This is terrible, but on my last visit ever with my grandma, we watched tv!!! She passed away and I so wish I had just shut that darn thing off and talked to her. So, to me tv is good for learning, and escape if we need it, but it can also get in the way of human interaction. My thoughts. > > I feel differently about the TV. Karac learned all the alphabet; his numbers > to 20; names of animals, and many songs by the age of 2 from watching Barney > and Sesame Street. Guest guest
All I know about this issue is that the only words my daughter actually will say have come from her favorite t.v. shows - so she will continue to watch them. It would be worse if I just left her in front of the t.v., but we play and point to things and are learning from it. I don't see how that is bad, and I do not believe that t.v. causes autism. People just want to pinpoint a cause and it is not that easy. >From: " greysonliam " <greysonliam@...> >Reply-autism >autism >Subject: Re: Autism and TV >Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2006 02:50:37 -0000 > >Awwww...watching Baby Einstein didn't cause your son's problems. >Don't even think that for a minute.
