, I am glad you have a helpful ex-mother-in-law and that you appreciate her. Kat has a helpful husband; I have help from my daughters. We all need a little help.

I think I told you that Karac wouldn't let me comb or cut his hair and that he was beginning to look like Samson! My husband and I just decided to pray that Karac would let someone cut his hair. Yesterday he said, "cut hair." I said, "do you want to cut your hair?" He said, "yes". I said, " do you want these little sissors?" He said, "yes". I gave him the scissors and guess what? He cut his bangs and all the hair on the sides and as much of the back as he could reach!!.

When I took him home, I thought oh no! his mother is going to be mad at me! I called her ahead of time and explained what happened. When she saw him she thought I wasn't telling the truth. She couldn't believe that he could do that. She had a pair of scissors on the breakfast table. Karac picked up the scissors and cut off a lock of hair. I said that is how he did it. She said, "Karac would you like for me to cut your hair?" He said, "yes". I thought that was a good time to leave. I can hardly wait to see him how he looks today.

Isn't it amazing how God answers prayers?

That's wonderful that you got him to cut his hair! With my son, who is only 4 yrs old, it's almost a fight to the death to cut his hair. I will usually get the clippers and buzz it short as it is easiest to care for that way. When I try to cut his hair, I have to have someone hold him while I do my best to get an even cut. He fights and screams the entire time and when I'm finished he literally mourns the loss of his hair! I've tried to let him grow it long, but he always gets something in it and he refuses to let me comb it in the morning. He also has a cow if I try putting mousse or gel in his hair. I think one of the main reasons why he doesn't like getting his hair cut is because of the sensations, the vibration from the clippers, the feeling of his hair being cut, etc. I have noticed that his scalp and ears are very sensitive to touch. His father (who is possibly autistic as well) is the same way.

Hi Pat,

Yes, I agree with you - it is a wonderful thing - and I firmly believe that prayers DO get answered. I am so glad that Karac decided to have his hair cut - and that you had a wonderful day together today. I bet he looked really good - and I hope he feels relaxed about the hair cut today!!

Yes, my mother in law is a darling. Her son and I married in early 1992 and Sonny came along at the end of the year. Sadly the marriage did not work out and we divorced in 1995. His dad was very early led and seemed to go off the rails. He also had little empathy (Aspergers?) but because I was so much younger and did not know anything about autism at the time I could not cope with it. He died in a motorcycle accident in 2001 and I think that if it wasn't for Sonny, his mother would not have been able to cope. Without her, I would not have been able to cope. She is a marvellous woman of great faith and integrity and loved me from the start. I am very very lucky to have her.

Hugs,

xx

So Sonny has been a real blessing to your mother-in-law. I understand that. If something happened to my husband I think the only thing that would keep me going would be karac. These autistic kids are such a blessing in so many ways. Love and blessings; you are a dear and great to have on this list. Pat K

Pat,

Yes Sonny is certainly a blessing to her. He is the absolute living double of his dad to look at which I thought would be painful for her at first - but it has had the opposite effect. We get on famously, although of course there are things that we do differently and can sometimes disagree on some things. However, without her I think I would be an absolute jibbering wreck. We are very similar in ways too which helps therefore there is a friendship as well as being in-laws.

Thanks to you and Kat for your kind words. I have not had time to contribute much the past few weeks - I've been watching Sonny like a hawk because of the new meds. He had a wonderful birthday (14th) on Sat and our family visited. It was the first birthday in seven years that people have been able to stay for the entire evening. Usually, there is a meltdown (too many people, heightened emotions, etc) and he has become aggressive and everyone has had to go home (my brother has two small children and its a worry) but this year - all went perfectly and he was even getting involved in games etc!!

I know I cannot expect perfection and I certainly don't expect it - but we have had such a better few weeks that the past few days have taken a nosedive. This morning he had a meltdown because he did not want to go to school and kicked a rather large dent in my car. Is it just me or does it feel worse when there has been a little respite? Its like I thought: 'Wow! Maybe we've got there and made some progress....." and then is all disintegrates before my eyes!

Love and best wishes,

xx

, I'm glad Sonny had a wonderful 14th birthday. Karac's 14th birthday was also his best birthday.

Your mother-in-law is so blessed to have you for a daughter-in-law. I so wanted a friendship with my daughter-in-law, but it just didn't happen. I do have three son-in-laws who go out of their way to be considerate of me and that is nice.

Well, Karac has started spitting, not at people; it's kind of like someone who chews tobacco and spits. I think that suddenly he doesn't want to swallow his own saliva! Has Sonny ever done that? I'm sure it will go away in time just like every other odd behavior that he comes up with. Got any suggestions? blessings, Pat K
