Guest guest
June, I felt compelled to reply to your post and say how very happy I am to hear that your son has improved so much! You must have been out of your mind with worry and how proud you must be that things are finally looking up and he has began to control/manage his behaviour. My son is 13 and his aggression also reached an unmaneagable level - hence he is on meds. But I hate myself for giving them to him even though it is to protect him as he would have hurt someone and been in a lot of trouble. I have tried no meds and its too dangerous for all involved - including him. But I am so pleased for you. Keep up the good work!! Regards, TV Talk and meds I am a longtime reader, first time poster – my son is almost 14 and loves to learn through TV. He has Asperger’s and dyslexia, so cannot learn well through the written word. We have TIVO and he records shows that pertain to his extreme interest – whatever that is at the time. For about 3 years, it was WWII fighter planes, so he recorded any and every show related to WWII. He replays them 20, 30, 40 times, but then retains all of what he learns. The WWII interest morphed into guns and war weapons. Now it is bass fishing and buck hunting that has his attention. The funniest part of the fishing interest is to see him in the front yard with his pole, casting hour upon hour into our green “lake”. Might I also add that he was on Abilify for about 18 months to help with aggression and anger issues, which increased greatly as he approached puberty. Abilify did initially help, but the weight gain was incredible and after about a year we saw the aggression return to an unmanageable point, even after increasing the dose to try and help. He was actually hospitalized in the psych unit and started on even more meds, which added more unwanted side effects such as uncontrollable movements. The psychiatrist finally took him off all meds, temporarily, to sort of clear him out in hopes of starting again. This was six months ago – he is still off all meds, just takes a B12 pill in the AM, and we are implementing an intense behavior mod program that has allowed us to gain control of the aggression. We tie his intense interests to rewards and consequences using a contract. And, he has dropped almost 30 pounds in the past six months – it looks like we popped him with a pin.
